MOBILE, Ala. - A medical team at the University of South Alabama's Children's & Women's Hospital have closely monitored the progress of a newborn who weighed only 10 ounces at birth on Feb. 15.
His parents, Phillip and Monica Whitlock, said tiny Malachi Andreas Whitlock is so far holding his own.
"I feel he's got 100 percent chance of survival," his father said.
They said they chose the name Malachi because it's one of the smallest books of the Bible, and Malachi means "messenger of God."
"He's so small, and he's sent a message to us of what love is," the father said.
Dr. Fabien Eyal, the director of USA's neonatal intensive care unit, said, "Everybody's pulling for him, but we know they're in for a very tough time."
Monica Whitlock had an emergency cesarean section after developing high blood pressure.
Malachi, at 10 ounces, weighed about 290 grams at birth. Most babies placed in the unit, Eyal said, weigh around 400 grams. One baby, born at 350 grams, did survive and went home this week.
Eyal attributed the "incredibly low birth weight" to the fact that Malachi stopped growing before his birth. He put Malachi's actual development at 20 weeks at the time of birth.
The normal gestation period is 40 weeks.
Eyal said babies born at 22 to 24 weeks are at "the limit of viability."
BG what a beautiful site the kiss good bye sent me into the choke up mode and that ain't easy.
It is worthy of second bump.
Folks if you prayed for Malachi and shared his life via FR you must visit his Memorial Website.

What a lovely tribute to our lil angel Malachi.
Continued prayers for with Monica and Philip and the rest of the family, and all of us here who wore the hats of Prayer Warriors.
My mom used to say when the summer breezes blow, if you listen carefully, you can hear the baby angels sing. To this day, when the wind kicks up, I silence myself to hear their song :)
Indeed we will always remember little Malachi and continue to include him and his mommy and daddy in our prayers.
Our love....
Logan, Beth & Nana
Indeed. He shall every be in our hearts and his loved ones in our prayers!
Prayers sent for Phillip and Monica.. hope they are doing well
Thank you. Phillp and I are doing pretty well these days. It is still hard to believe he is gone and that it has already been three months. I read his posts here a lot. It helps me to remember. Everyone here was so wondeful and we appreciate all of the support and love.
Thanks again!
I Love You Malachi! Happy 3-month Angel Day!
"(Sympathy to the family on the Child's passing)"
I'm confused. Why was this added to the headline? Did this child die? I've read a few of the posts and so far everyone is indicating that the child is alive. I'm praying that is true, but am confused by what was in the parenthesis. :)
Oh nevermind. I see that this was an old article that I hadn't seen before. I'll be sure to check the date next time. :)
I am the mother of Malachi and unfortunately he died three months ago yesterday.
I am so very sorry, Malachismom. Please accept my condolences. I feel bad that I hadn't read or known about baby Malachi. :(
Oh, that is okay. He was a big celebrity here for awhile. I too wish you could have shared in our joy of sharing him with FR.
Thanks. You just don't know how good it feels to know that so many people still remember him. People around here hardly ever mention his name just thinking that it is too hard for us to talk about him, but what people don't realize is that we WANT to talk about him. I miss giving you "updates" and just talking in general. At least, Malachi brought us all together!
Like Texas Termite said, let us know how you are doing from time to time. I was just thinking about Malachi on Wednesday when Brad's Gramma pinged me about a newborn baby. Can't believe it's already been three months since little Malachi's passing.
Thanks ladies. I have been posting a little here and there, mostly on prayer sites. I try to offer my prayer as so many did for me and my family. I still keep in touch with M0sby and Brad's Gramma a good bit and let them know how we are doing.
Monica and Philip,
