NEW YORK "The Family Circus" reached its 45th anniversary today. Or maybe it will reach its 45th anniversary tomorrow. That's because the comic panel started on a leap-year day -- Feb. 29, 1960.

Bil Keane created "The Family Circus," and now does it with his son, Jeff Keane, for more than 1,500 newspapers via King Features Syndicate.

Nothing will ever touch the records for lameness set by Peanuts. Charles Shulz's strip competed for least funny with Mary Worth, and Mary Worth had the excuse that it wasn't trying to funny.

We need to time this right, probably Saturday night, but a silly vanity thread asking for nominations would probably draw a lot of interesting responses.

I don't understand why my paper keeps printing Peanuts. It was a reasonably cute series, but the cartoonist died last century, for pete's sake.

He's just miffed because he never found the Joe Shlabotnick baseball card either.

I think there was a spoof. Not sure if it was in National lampoon? The spoof was called Family Circuit.

I was always drawn to the innocence. Only later in life did I question my attraction. Like how'd that mom have all those big headed children without C-Section. There's a story in there. \

My other attraction? You'll have to find them.

I followed it for a while, years ago, hoping that it would either:

a) be funny and/or interesting; or

b) one of the kids would finally lose it with a high-powered rifle inside the house

Neither happened, so I gave up on the thing.

"C'mon, only communists don't like peanuts! :)"

The only humor to be had in any Peanuts strip that has come out in the last 40 years is in thinking that somehow Charles Shulz thought what he was putting out was actually funny.

'Family Circus' is in the same league as Art Linkletter's 'Kids Say the Darndest Things'

People who HAVE kids, or are 'tuned into them', or just find a joy in them, WILL see a humor they can relate to.

Pure...simple...corney...lame...dumb... not trying to be funny.........THAT'S what kids are!

Yeah, I purposely didn't mention "Peanuts" because it has so many fans out there, but it really isn't funny at all. If it weren't for the popularity of the Christmas special, then it probably would've been remanded to obscurity for the last three decades or so.
