Yes, to have been captured by Germany made them "traitors" to the NKVD. Even Russian slave laborers "liberated" by the Soviets were often sent to the Soviet prison camps.

People get the government they deserve. This poll, unfortunately, tells me the future of Demcracy in Russia is not very promising.

Mussolini made the trains run on time and Hitler built the autobahnen; those were positive things, right..?

What is with some people?

It must be the 50% of the population that he didn't murder.

"According to 50% of Russians, Joseph Stalin played a positive role in Russia's life."

  =

This is the "mentality" we are dealing with in our current relations with Russia. No wonder they support Islamo-fascism (as long as its outside their own borders). Russia will continue to wallow in their own sewage until they come to grips with the horrific criminality of their past.

And because of Stalin's terror the Soviet R&D cycle lost 5 years. When Barbarossa hit, most Soviet equipment was stuff that had been first rate in 1934-1937.

There is a lot of schadenfreude in the Russian national character. A delight in seeing the high brought low. They want a Stalin to shoot the oligarchs who got rich while they suffered during the Yeltsin era.

Gee, do 50% of Germans positively assess Hitler's role. Do 50% of Cambodians positively assess Pol Pot's role? Probably not.

I will not even consider arguing in favor of what Stalin did or did not politically or militarily.

The point I was making is that the Russians , that is, not the Americans nor the Euros or any are others, are the ones remembering directly or historically a leader who saved them.

The responses top my post were not from a Russian viewpoint.

That's not necessarily clear cut. For those areas that experienced German occupation, there were at least some folks there who hoped they'd never go back to USSR rule. They were hoping that the Western Allies would invade Europe earlier, and would keep going clear into Eastern Europe including the Baltics, Belarus, and Ukraine. At that point, on to Moscow.

It should be noted that anyone around to participate in the poll wasn't murdered by Stalin so the sampling method is a bit skewed. I suggest next time they ask some of those frozen corpses near Siberian gulags they unearth from time to time.
