Anna Quindlen's Ode To Lies
Newsweek ^ | 1/01/2005 | Anna Quindlen

Posted on 03/04/2005 8:09:27 AM PST by George Stupidnopolis

Suddenly they were gone, all 7,532 of them, vanished completely. But for a little more than two weeks visitors to Central Park were welcomed as though by bevies of long-legged bridesmaids, their gaudy skirts rippling in a winter wind.

Can the lefty Quindlen write anything without lying? She gets more Clintonesque by the minute. This piece was obviously written in late February to make the March 7th issue (which I received on March 1st). But, on March 3rd, the idiotic "Gates" were still flapping at 72nd and 5th in midtown Manhattan. Guess she figured the hicks in Flyover Country wouldn't know the difference.

This was in the same issue in which Newsweek superimposed Martha Stewarts head on a body double for their front cover.

And journalists wonder why we don't trust them. Jayson Blair was no worse than the rest of them!

A really cheap clotheline...covered with K-Mart shower curtains. The Gates were beyond tacky. I've seen better "art" on the front yard of Arkansas trailer parks

Hey...I live in the Missouri Ozarks. I usually opt for gazing balls, plaster lawn burros and a few steel-belted radials on the roof. Them flamingos is too fancy fur my taste.

Though I would like a lawn jockey

Pretty slow news cycle over the last week or so, if stories bashing the Gates and Hunter S Thompson are still attracting attention.

I guess that's a good thing.

Yep, saw with my own eyes yesterday, from the 40th floor of an office building overlooking Central Park, that nearly *all* of these silly pieces of visual pollution are still in place -- from 59th Street all the way to the far side of the reservoir up in the 100s. Provided good fodder for a bunch of bankers to make small talk: "Should've been sponsored by Home Depot", "Looks like a contruction site to me", "$21 million! I work with Habitat for Humanity, and we can build a house for $70,000", "Can you believe people actually made long trips to New York to see a bunch of orange shower curtains?", and so on and so on.

Hey, just think of the 'Gates' not as a con-job to seperate people-who-lack-confidence-in-their-own-judgement-and-need-validation-from -the-smart-set from their money but as a way to get rubes and suckers to spend money in cash-strapped and tourist-starved New York. Without the christo's shower curtains, every workign stiff in New York would have to pay more taxes this year.

You're distaste for what some NY'ers regard as art does not give you license to insult the decore of those who live in "manufactured housing" while suggesting all people in Arkansas live thusly. One man's rusty pickup is another man's pride and joy...even if it doesn't run.

I bought a mobile home here in Tennessee once, and was SHOCKED to learn the tires that go on the roof didn't come with it as part of the package!!

Well of course it does....particularly since I'm more Ozark Hillbilly (a native) than the people to whom you refer.

Man, when did they start allowing the PC and humor-impaired on Free Republic. What's next, sensitivity and tolerance classes?

The NYT replaced Qindlen with MoDo and no one noticed. Two inflated, self-important featherheads.
