You are all invited to the North Mississippi hamlet of Mantachie tomorrow evening (Saturday, March 4) for the welcome home party for a hero Marine.
The party begins at 6 p.m. and is hosted by FReeper PMMD81 (Proud Marine Mom of Dusty) and the remainder of Dusty's family. BBQ and fixin's will be provided by yours truly. I'm not a family member, just a coworker of PMMD81, proud USAF veteran, and grateful recipient of her son's service. Bring your own beverages and let's show this young hero how much we appreciate his service to our country. FReepmail me for directions to the house.
Lance Corporal Dusty arrived home Wednesday Evening after 7 months in Iraq. A veteran of the liberation of Fallujah, he sports two new tatoos and a scar from some shrapnel. He has not been told "officially" but he has been given to understand that he has been nominated for the Bronze Star for his heroism in rescuing fellow Marines from a burning building during a firefight. But we have to agree not to ask him much about it. He's not ready to talk about it yet.
I will be putting almost 90 lbs of BBQ on the smoker tonight so bring your appetite and salute the returning hero.
Give me a shout when you arrive and I'll introduce you around. I'll be the fat, bald guy serving the BBQ.
Hope that sore knee isn't bothering you so much you can't exercise your Missippy ping dinger.
I'll have a chair and leg prop reserved just for you. Hope you can get up this way.
I cannot be in North Mississippi for the event, but please extend a big Welcome Home Soldier! from me. :)
Congrats...you all must be so proud...keep the beer on ice..and now, for the really important question...dry or wet rub?
Dry Rub. Pecan and hickory smoke. 18 hours. Smoke ring half- to 1 inch deep. So moist and tender it falls apart. My pulled pork can be "pulled" with plastic salad tongs. I do that as a demonstration on a regular basis.
It's not necessary, and if you taste the BBQ first you won't want any, but I always have my special brew BBQ sauce on hand if requested.
Beer (and sodas) already on ice.
Have known PMMD81 for about a year now and have shared many tense days while she waited to hear if her son was involved in this incident or that. It was a wonderful moment to finally meet him Wednesday. He is a true American hero.
Hopefully, I'll get to sit with him a bit before he reports to Pendleton and compile a profile for posting on FR.
Good morning. How about a cyber party?
ITS
Weve got music .
Weve got dancers ..
Weve got amusement .
Weve got food
And, weve got drink ..
LET'S PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!
I've just started doing a little bit of my own BBQ..work in progress..trial and error..drives trhe raccoons nuts..they all hang around ...I've learned that dry is best...and my secret ingredient is some really good paprika...
Not my neck of the woods, but please congratulate and thank this Marine for me. He joins a long list of many, many liberating leathernecks throughout the years, and should be proud of his place in history.
Tell Dusty "Welcome home" for me. My son is a Marine in Iraq and we're hoping he'll be home in April.
"and my secret ingredient is some really good paprika..."
And don't be shy with the garlic.
You mention the coons hanging around. Someday I might be convinced to tell you how I got the nickname "Pork Chop". Hint, it involves a drunk woman biting my arm.
North Mississippi is a bit far to travel tonight, but buy the Marine a beer for me.
:)
You're right!! The reason my BBQ is so popular here in Muddysippi is because I grew up and learned to cook BBQ in West Texas.
Please thank him on behalf of my family - and pass along a big welcome home!
What is it about Freepers and FR that brings happy tears to my eyes just about every day?
BBQ - beer - family - friends - all in the good US of A - it doesn't get any better than that!
Can't be in Ole Miss for the event, but thanks for the invite. Please convey our deep respect and gratitude.
Welcome home, Marine! And thank you for all that you do. And for the last seven months - very well done! :-)
NerdDad, why did you have to say BBQ? I'm so hungry right now, and can just imagine the smell of that smoke ... umm. I guess I'll have to make a stop and pick up some ribs at the groc. store.
Will be there in spirit.
Are you anywhere near Iuka?
Just a hop, skip and jump. About 45 miles straight south of you.
A few miles north and east of Tupelo.
