Mom Says Boyfriend Sacrificed 13-Month-Old Daughter

AKRON, Ohio -- A Springfield Township mother broke down in tears as she was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with the death of her 13-month-old daughter. Vanessa McGlumphy, 25, and the baby's father made statements to the court Wednesday, NewsChannel5 reported.

McGlumphy, pleaded guilty last month to involuntary manslaughter and child endangering for not protecting her daughter.

The toddler died last October. She suffered a broken neck, a severed liver and 12 broken ribs. She also had been struck 40 times with a needle on the bottom of both feet and the side of her head, the prosecutor said. McGlumphy said that she thought her boyfriend, Daniel Duffield, 32, sacrificed her child because he is a different religion than she is and that they performed a ritual on the girl as a result of his belief. McGlumphy characterized Duffield as a "black pagan," the prosecutor said.

Duffield was found guilty Tuesday of involuntary manslaughter and murder in the death of the toddler.

He will be sentenced March 9. He faces 15 years to life in prison.

I'm normally not a big fan of the death penalty, but if anyone deserves it, it's this guy. 15 years to life sounds like a joke to me.

This doesn't vindicate Dr. Laura at all. I didn't even know that Dr. Laura stood for such nonsense. As a step-parent myself, I'm glad that her way of thinking isn't widespread.

Does this make any kind of sense to anyone?

Yes. She says "I think" because she's not sure if it is the right combination of words to get her out of as much trouble as possible. Like an adolescent, she actually believes that she can talk her way out of it, if only she can find the right story-line. What actually happened is utterly irrelevant to her right now.

Good for you for being honest with this woman and trying to save her from her rampant self-destruction. If your friend was in her right mind, she'd see you're the only one who TRULY cares about her by trying to protect her and her daughter from some abuser loser she met on the Internet. Women like that get so needy they mistake sex for love and caring. They think attention equals healthy affection. It's sad their self-esteem gets so low they tell themselves "I can't do any better than this." She needs to wake up and realize if this guy was worth a damn, he'd not have to be trolling on the Internet for dates. Not to broadbrush all people who date over the Internet, but let's face it that should be her first warning. Don't give up. You have to keep trying no matter how hard it is. My best to you that you'll be able to snap your friend out of this blind, selfish stupor she's in. And may God protect her daughter from this guy. I hope her daughter will see what a fool her mother is being rather than think this is how a woman behaves and start modelling the same behavior of shacking up with whatever "man" comes along, no matter how loathsome. Wow, I really feel for you here. How frustrating this must be.

Yeah, maybe we can end up with more dead kids murdered by the boyfriends of selfish, needy women who don't give a damn what their "man" does to their kid because it's more important to be with someone than to protect your kid.

I'm glad your situation worked out, but a single parent with young kids needs to make them, not dating, their focus. There are just too many losers out there ready and willing to use their mothers to get in to the home and prey upon the kids. Sure you judged correctly and ended up with a good guy I guess, but all too often that is not the case. I don't think it's worth the risk where small children are concerned. When the kids are older and as teens can protect themselves better and speak up about any attempts at abuse, then dating can be considered. But with young kids, even a minimal risk of bringing a predator into the home can't be tolerated. Sorry, my opinion...and I think some of the sad stories others have related on this thread in support of my remarks bear me out.

Recently they had a story on National Geographic about Adam. He was a young boy whose body was found in the river in England. The investigators named him Adam and thought he was about 11 years old. The investigators did all they could to find Adams killers and who Adam was. His body had been mutilated and cut to pieces.

With DNA and other forensic methods, they traced him to Africa. I forget which country.

It turns out. he was used in some sort of sacrifice. They explained how trafficking in children for sex, slave labor, and sacrificial offerings has become a lucrative business.

Although they had some good suspects, they did not have enough evidence to bring charges. Nor did they find his parents.

Fox News just did a three part story on a UN scandal involving the exploitation of children. It just seems like the world is worried about murderers, but not about the innocent children who are being preyed upon by human animals.

Thank you, I am praying fervently on this. I'm hoping it doesn't put a wedge in our friendship.

Thanks for the comments on step-parenting. I lost my mother at age 5 and my dad married one classy, terrific lady for whom I have the utmost respect....and love.

I remember Dr. Laura relating her perspective on singe parents remarrying before their children reach adulthood. Being a step-child, I found it patently offensive and haven't listened to her since.

There is no such thing as a "black pagan." There might be black people who proclaim themselves pagan, but I've never met any.

Frankly, there is no such thing as a "pagan" anymore. Paganism is a stupid hash of Oriental this, mystic that, Gaia something else, blah blah blah . . . it's an excuse to be anti-Christian, is all it is.

(And I have a LOT of Rennie friends who call themselves pagan.)

I founded 'Pagans for Reagan' back in my SCA days. It was to yank the pagans chains, some of them had no sense of humor. Bad as christians.
