Can the Democratic Party Survive? by Scott Shore 02 March 2005
The likely prognosis at this point is that the Democrats will pass into the pages of American history much like the Whig Party.
Based on current trends, one is tempted to conclude in a similar fashion as Joseph Schumpeter, who asked the question Can Capitalism Survive? After a lengthy discussion, the proponent of free market dynamism concluded -- probably not. As a lifelong Republican (or conservative libertarian), I reach a similar conclusion about the Democratic Party, but without glee or a sense of great triumph. The likely prognosis at this point is that the Democrats will pass into the pages of American history much like the Whig Party. The Democrats are increasingly out of touch with the concerns of most Americans and largely captive to loud and radical interest groups.

Ratz and Vermin always find a niche to survive in........
Man, I sure hope not. And if Senator Frist and the rest of the Senate Republicans would invoke the "nuclear option" on judicial appointments, it might help kick the last feeble leg from under the rats.
At the grassroots level the wackos from MoveOn, Deniacs, and Michael Moore acolytes are taking over and will force future 'rat candidates farther and farther left.
The Democratic party my father belonged to and believed in is already gone. Who knows what this group it has evolved into really is, but it will be here far into the future...fragmented, hyporcritical, divisive, mean-spirited and without a vision or positive contributions.
Well, roaches have survived for millennia, so anything's possible.
The Dems will be back in spades. Once the the Republicans become corrupted by power the trends will reverse.
It's the way of the world.
True. And if they get anymore left and nuts as the ones you just mentioned they don't have a snowball's chance. But if they changed to a Reid and Bayh middle of the road strategy we may have some competition dependant on who we run.
Correct. My take is that eventually, the centrist Dems will rebel against the Left. The Left, with a crusading spirit, will break away from the Dem party to form their own party (which will fail miserably). The schism will set the Dem party back 15-20 years, until the Republicans do in fact get fat and lazy and voted out of office.
However the chances are less likely than my wife actually hitting with that damned lotto ticket she always buys.
Certainly, it will survive! There will always be a need for people to work in the sewers, people who love their work and environment!
"The Democratic party my father belonged to and believed in is already gone."
Bingo! At the risk of angering a few FReepers, the Republican Party has become what the Democratic Party USED to be (more or less). The Democrats are desperately trying to steer away from the word "liberal" (BAAAAD connotation!) and use "progressive" instead...which just happens to be one of the favored words on communist/socialist websites. Coincidence? What do you think?

is an interesting website for bios and other info on many well-known leftists and radicals (Clooney, Clintons, lots of others)
Of course it can, and unfortunately, will. Four things need to occur that will ensure the survival of the democratic party:
1. The FDR democrats will eventually die as they age, and the emotional attachment to the FDR legacy of just as much socialism as we can stand will die with them.
2. The next generation of crybabies, i.e. the baby boomers, will eventually die, and the legacy of avoiding personal responsibility will die with them.
3. The successive generation of over-educated idiots presently inhabiting college campuses will make their way into the real world, start families, and become more conservative as a result. This will have the effect of pulling the died-in-the-wool democrats among them closer to the center.
4. There is a revolution under way right now in which the official, formerly respected sources of information are discredited on a daily basis. People today have access to more sources of information than ever before, which gives them a better perspective on issues. These better-informed people will make much better, more reasoned decisions (we hope).
It's possible that, in addition to the schism you mention, the Republican Party will split into a libertarian segment and a religious-right segment -- 4 parties, with coalitions forming.
Great article and I agree completely.
Amen!
I second the motion, the Democratic party that our parents and grandparents belonged to and believed in seems long gone.
Ann
I doubt the Dems are gone. It would be the worst thing to happen to the Republican Party if it did fade away. A one-party state isn't such a hot thing to hope for.
They will survive as long as our current SCOTUS continues it's outrageous behavior.
