China shuts down 47,000 'harmful' internet cafes

China has closed 47,000 internet cafes in a campaign aimed at creating a more "wholesome environment" for children.
The countrys leaders encourage internet use for business and education, but have expressed growing concern that it gives children access to violent or sexually explicit material, and have tried to block online criticism of their Communist rule.
The cafes closed in the crackdown had been "admitting minors and engaged in dissemination of harmful cultural information", the Communist Party newspaper Peoples Daily said on its website.
About 21,000 of the closed cafes might be allowed to reopen after making unspecified changes. It said the business licences of 2131 were revoked.
China has the worlds second-largest number of internet users after the United States, with 87 million people online.
The government said in October that it had detained 445 people for operating websites deemed pornographic, and fined internet cafe operators a total of 100 million yuan (£6.2 million) for letting children play violent games.

I wonder how many people here will applaud China for "protecting children" from "Internet dangers".

It's okay to kill the children over there, just not expose them to porn.
I think the Chinese would tell you that by aborting children, they /are/ preventing them from viewing porn. Although that's a bit extreme for my taste.

It's all Bush's fault...we all know this was because they don't want people to see what's going on in the Ukraine, Iraq, Lebanon, Afganistan...the Chinese don't want their people to start standing up for themselves.

Murdoch Builds China Home
NewsMax ^ | 12/21/04 | Carl Limbacher
Australian-born media magnate Rupert Murdoch is building a home near the Forbidden City in Beijing.
The News Corporation executive chairman was building the house on property he bought in the Chinese capital's political and diplomatic area, Britain's Daily Telegraph website said Tuesday.
Quoting Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, a paper once owned by the media mogul, it said Murdoch is building a large house in the siheyuan courtyard style, deemed to embody Confucian thought.
The 21,000 square feet home will have two stories underground and will be built from traditional grey bricks and roof tiles, including some from a former house on the site.
Mr Murdoch is also in the process of buying a new residence in New York's Fifth Ave. He reportedly paid $44 million for the posh 4000 square feet pad.

By no means did I say their actions are justified. All I wanted to convey is the fact that no good comes out of easily-accessible pornography over the net. There is a problem with the kids today being able to get on a computer and access multitudes of smut (and other things). Anyone who thinks that it is a child's "right" to be able to look at porn can pack THEIR shit and move to China.

And our point is that nothing good comes from restrciting freedom.
China is not a free country, and their actions have nothing to do with porn.
It has everything to o with keeping students from organizing as they did at Tiannemin Square.
Do you truly believe that it has anything to do with blocking porn?

It's almost like there are several people or agencies in China making conflicting decisions. Perhaps the scope of their state is too broad. Such things sure don't fly in the USA.
