The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed outrage at the remarks of West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, who suggested that some Republican tactics on judicial nominations were similar to Adolf Hitler's use of power in Nazi Germany.
In remarks from the Senate floor yesterday, Sen. Byrd compared a Senate rule cutting off debate on nominations to Hitler's use of constitutional means to push legislation through the German Reichstag at the start of the Nazi era.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
The Senator shows a profound lack of understanding as to who Hitler was and what he and his regime represented. Senator Byrd must repudiate his remarks immediately and apologize to the American people for showing such disrespect for this country's democratic process. It is hideous, outrageous and offensive for Senator Byrd to suggest that the Republican Party's tactics could in any way resemble those of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
They forgot how he compared the Democratic Party to Jesus Christ.
I may commute from MD to W VA just to volunteer for whatever campaign will kick this KKK Clown from office.
That would be the democrat party which is working to overturn the Ten Commandments?
ADL???! Could they be the start of them swinging sides?
Byrd? Compared them to Hitler?
That's Byrd's idea of a compliment.
As a Jew myself who despises the far left ADL (who wrote a brief saying the 10 Commandments shouldn't be allowed in government buildings), I have to admit they are fair in applying their standards across the poltiical spectrum when it comes to hate speech and of course Israel too.
He needs to apologize to the RNC, as well.
Byrd is an intellectual lightweight of reprehensible character.
I think he has made one heck of a mistake. He had better make a very humble apology pretty soon, or that is one Byrd that is going to be roasted pretty darned soon. He has offended a very large population of this country, not just the Administration.
The Dims are losing it. Now, the Republicans have to to stomp upon their broken backs, and then enact the conservative agenda (which is why they were elected).
It's time for the old fool to retire! How many years are left on his term?
unbelievable.
That would be nice if it were true. What Foxman is actually protesting is tossing around their icon for international victimhood around lightly. If you devalue Hitler down to the level of run-of-the-mill Republican senators, you are essentially watering down Hitler's evil and minimizing the ADL's status as professional victims.
If Byrd had said "these are the tactics of the old southern slaveholders", you would have got the same kneejerk condemantion from the black caucus, not to defend Republicans but to uphold their victimhood status.
They also forgot to make any mention of the KKK. :=)
Hes thirty years younger, so lacks senility as an excuse.
Yep, but we need to take out the Grand Wizard first.
I see Abe Foxman saw his shadow.
