Weighing in at six words, 55 letters and a tongue-twisting 17 syllables, the proposed new name for BWI Airport, everyone seems to agree, is an orthographical behemoth. Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport -- the name proposed in legislation making its way through the Maryland General Assembly -- would, few dispute, appropriately honor one of Maryland's most revered sons. The change would cost the state at least $2.1 million, according to preliminary estimates.

Not much worse than Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
How many people actually know who Hartsfield OR Jackson were?
Regardless of the name, I still hate that airport. :-)

I don't have a problem with it. They just should call it Thurgood Marshall International Airport or just Marshall International for short.
Airports are amazingly resistant to name changes. It's been several years and I still think of Washington DC's airport as Washington National.
Also, is there something in the water in Maryland? They couldn't decide on a simple name for the new baseball stadium a few years back, so they compromised with the cumbersome "Oriole Park at Camden Yards". Sheesh.
I live near and fly from Bob Hope (Burbank) airport.
When I call for a taxi, it seems like if I say "Burbank Airport" the dispatcher says "Bob Hope?" If I say "Bob Hope Airport" they say "where?"
I like the name change -- Bob Hope was a very big influence on the SF Valley. But even after these several years, the name doesn't really stick.
It is possible but the letters MIA (Marshall International Airport) is already given to Miami International Airport.
BWI remains "Friendship" Airport to me. I scoffed when I heard about its renaming in, what, the late 60s? Double-scoff now.

Thurgood Marshall was the most underachieving justice on the SCOTUS in 50 years.
I agree - Friendship makes much more sense.
Awful names that fail to tell where they are.

If the point is to honor a black person from Maryland, Frederick Douglass is more deserving and made a greater contribution to America, at least in my opinion.
The name became Hartsfield-Jackson last year.
There was a big controversy over the addition of "Jackson" for Maynard Jackson, deceased ex-mayor of Atlanta.
Incidentally, Hartsfield was an earlier ex-mayor.
