What's With That Overstock.com Ad?
Slate ^ | 2/28/2005 | Seth Stevenson

The spot: It's a world of white—white floors, white walls, white furnishings … and a stunning, middle-aged babe dressed all in white. She's smiling at us. "It's all about the O," she purrs. Whoa! That's hot! After six or seven costume changes, she explains what the O really stands for: Overstock.com, a Web site that sells liquidated merchandise.

Admit it: You can't take your eyes off this commercial. I know that you can't, because I've read your blogs. The Web is overflowing with your rants: This ad is so annoying! This woman is so freaking hot! I can't stand this woman! What is going on with this ad? I am deeply confused! Please help me!

Relax, people. Ad Report Card is here to explain this commercial's oddly powerful hold on us. Let me tell you what it's really all about:

It is called advertising with schemes that work.

Oh, just in case someone hasn't seen that ad. I know, I know, not likely.

The ad got old real fast. At first it was kind of funny (I knew what it was for as Overstock.com had run another "Its all about the O" add a while back) but after seeing it every day and just about every channel I turned to, it became annoying fairly quickly.

But I must admit, the woman is attractive.

She's OK, not what I would call "hot" by any means.

Of course that part of the commercial is not "all about the gold". LOL!

Anyone has to ask??
Let me point out the obvious:
1.the "O"
2.camera panning crotch shot in tennis outfit
3.obligatory "suck" shot with straw
4.and the classic sexy librarian with glasses

DUH!

In addition to German and English, Sabine speaks French and Italian. She is proficient in basic tactical pistol skills

Wow. She's the complete package.

"diphthong"

I am a techie, I know many other languages better then English unfortunately. Therefore I confess, I actually had to go to Dictionary.com to convince myself that this was not an undergarment for Natalie Maines.

Ummm, haven't seen it.

About the only things I've caught on TV lately:
24, which is on the PVR or the VCR, so I skip commercials.
Battlestar Galactica, ditto on the PVR
"Whose Line is It Anyway?" on ABC Family from 10-11pm, because I'm falling asleep and it's silly. But usually, I pause it for a while, so I fast-forward through commercials to catch up.

If I get to watch TV at any other point, I'm flipping to a station that doesn't have a commercial on at the moment.

OTOH, my kids have probably seen it. THey seem to own the sets.

Yea, but is there any stock at Overstock. My searches there rarely result in what I am looking for.

Or a fire hose out of control.

I despise the commercials, by the way. They are aired WAY too often.
