We hardly ever watch Comedy Central's "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," but our TV happened to be tuned to it last night when erstwhile Clinton aide Nancy Soderberg, author of "The Superpower Myth: The Use and Misuse of American Might" (foreword by Bill Clinton, blurb by Madeleine Albright) came on. We're not sure what possessed us to turn on the sound and watch, but we're glad we did, for it was a fascinating interview. Here's a TiVo-assisted transcript of most of it:
Stewart: This book--it talks about the superpower myth of the United States. There is this idea, the United States is the sole superpower, and I guess the premise of the book is we cannot misuse that power--have to use it wisely, and not just punitively. Is that--
Soderberg: That's right. What I argue is that the Bush administration fell hostage to the superpower myth, believing that because we're the most powerful nation on earth, we were all-powerful, could bend the world to our will and not have to worry about the rest of the world. I think what they're finding in the second term is, it's a little bit harder than that, and reality has an annoying way of intruding.
Stewart: But what do you make of--here's my dilemma, if you will. I don't care for the way these guys conduct themselves--and this is just you and I talking, no cameras here [audience laughter]. But boy, when you see the Lebanese take to the streets and all that, and you go, "Oh my God, this is working," and I begin to wonder, is it--is the way that they handled it really--it's sort of like, "Uh, OK, my daddy hits me, but look how tough I'm getting." You know what I mean? ....

I like Jon Stewert also. Sometimes I do cringe at a particularly liberally-biased joke, but all-in-all I think his show is a hoot.
Be patient...the 'Rats just haven't come out with their white paper yet; as soon as talking points are established, all will fall back into the appropriate party position.
true enough. LOL
That has indeed been the message from the very start. It got drowned out by the enemies of our country dems/media.

excerpt:
Here is the crux of Mr. Bushs liberty doctrine: Our nations cause has always been larger than our nations defense. We fight, as always, for a just peacea peace that favors human liberty. We will defend the peace against threats from terrorists and tyrants. We will preserve the peace by building good relations among the great powers. And we will extend the peace by encouraging free and open societies on every continent.

The truth will always out no matter the efforts to silence it.
I find that his best jokes seem to be aimed at the impotent, powerless Democrats than the Bush administration. He shows no quarter to the Democrats whereas Bush has seemed to earn a little respect --much to Stewart's dismay of course.
The interview segment of the show can sometimes be very revealing, though. In this case, Stewart rose above doctrinaire Bush-hating and his guest was definitely caught off-guard.
Don't fall for it.
The guy is still a liberal dork. He has admitted on a couple of other shows that maybe Bush had the right idea(after the Iraq elections) but he's still not willing to give in.
The show has some funny highlights but most of his show is extremely anti-Bush administration.
Not to worry. I never watch his lame show.
And she had two other stupid idiots to help her with that assumption. Conclusion -three stupid heads are not better than one smart one.
Osama could not have said it better! Not having the opportunity to edit does have a tendency to bring out the truth.
Another example of obstructionism.
Enough said. All you need to know about the left.
ATTENTION: Jon Stewart is NOT funny! Jon Stewart has NEVER been funny! He is also NOT witty, intelligent, entertaining, or interesting. We do not need this sphincter on our side!
Listen to Soderberg root against the United States. It just goes to prove what Limbaugh has been saying all along: bad news for the United States is good new for Democrats.
Don't worry, he ain't on our side. But even some idiots can read the writing on the wall.
and good news is bad news for this hag's book sales. Too funny.
Anyone who would publicly back John Kerry the way he did, putting his reputation as an equal-opportunity offender/comedian/pundit on the line, has a whole lot of stupid in him that will take more than 3 months to get rid of.
Soderberg: It's scary for Democrats, I have to say.
Scary. Imagine. The success of freedom is scary to them.
It must be painful to be completely on the wrong side of history and then to slowly realize it.

It is painful. But if you don't bury the realization in denial, it is like a birth; you end up with this wonderful sense of enlightenment and understanding. Fellow ex-libs can probably identify with this.
