FAQ: The next video game consoles?
Cnet ^ | March 1, 2005 | David Becker

The swallows come back to San Juan Capistrano every year, the Olympics happen every four years, and old video game consoles get junked every five years.

Which means that the game industry is due for a shake-up any quarter now. The current crop of consoles--Sony's PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube--all have been on the market for about four years.

Each manufacturer wants to squeeze as much market life as possible out of the current machines, so they won't spill too many details about future consoles for fear of making the current ones look outdated. But information on next-generation plans has slowly accumulated, supplemented by a steady stream of rumors that range from outlandish to vaguely plausible.

What's new:
The current crop of consoles have been on the market for about four years, which means that the game industry is due for a shake-up.

Bottom line:
Manufacturers are being tight-lipped about future game consoles for fear of making the current ones look outdated, but that hasn't stopped CNET News.com from digging up details on price, capabilities and more.

More stories on game consoles Here's what we know or think we know about the new game systems.

What's it going to be called? Sony--For a while, Sony wouldn't even confirm that there would be another version of the PlayStation at all. But lately, even Sony executives are comfortable uttering the words "PlayStation 3."

Here I thought I was being a bit of a Luddite by not buying one of the new game consoles until they came down under $100. and now PS3 or whatever they are calling it is coming out.

I'm not a Luddite, I'm an anachronism!

We like the Nintendo because of it's "younger audience" oriented games. Not as many releases, but typically you can find many family friendly titles. The kids only get to touch it on the weekends and that's limited, but they enjoy it a great deal.

The worst I can see from this is I'll have access to many more "used" titles.

Half-life 2 is the only game I wish I could play on my ps2, but right now I am more interested in checking out the new Gran Turismo

Yeah, HL2 is awesome. Right now I'm addicted to Counterstrike:Source, the bundled online accessory.

If you're on there too, my name is 'Leaky Meat'.

Nice Screen shots!

That was an erie level. I was just thinking about replaying the "drive up the coast" again. That was all so amazing and immersive. What an achievement by Valve.

Just finished KOTOR II. It was very good, and arguably as good as KOTOR I, although I liked KOTOR I better.

I also picked up Vampire:Bloodlines cheap recently. That seems to be a good way to divert myself after the kids go to sleep and I'm relaxing for the evening.

And yeah, Dad gets to "play" whenever he wants. Kids have to "earn" their time. I love being a tyrant...
