Unfortunately, the problems with Russia is that after 3/4 of a century of socialist rule, there is no useful industry except for various forms of organized crime. The Caspian was a disappointment. For a while, they glossed that over with illicit oil from Iraq, but now that's dried up, so Putin's striking a deal with Iran. If we DID have to go in, wanna bet there'll be a load of former Soviet generals hightailing out of Tehran at the last moment, while the news is reporting the Iranian army using Sov - I mean RUSSIAN - weapons and tactical?
Organized crime and thuggery is really the only thing Putin knows, despite whatever good intentions he thinks he has. He is NOT benefiting Mother Russia as much as he seems to think he is.

Doug, in the years after George W. Bush, many of us will miss his clear and unmistakable beliefs and positions. It's rare these days to have a politician with GWB's sense of purpose and clarity of vision. Whether I agree with him or not, he is the REAL DEAL and he will not be denied that. His compassionate conservatism is real and even though some of us disagree with some of his social policies, nobody can call him a bullshitter. Come 2009 we will miss this guy, but his place in history is certain
