BTK Suspect Charged With 10 Murder Counts
By DAVID TWIDDY, Associated Press Writer
WICHITA, Kan. - Dennis Rader, the churchgoing family man and Cub Scout leader accused of leading a double life as the BTK serial killer, was charged Tuesday with 10 counts of first-degree murder.
Rader made his first court appearance since his Friday arrest by videoconference from his cell at the Sedgwick County detention center. During the brief hearing, Rader sat with his hands folded behind a small desk.
The BTK killer, whose nickname stands for "Bind, Torture, Kill," was suspected of eight deaths beginning in 1974, but authorities said Saturday they had linked two additional victims to the serial killer.
Rader's arrest has also prompted nearby law enforcement agencies through Kansas to reinvestigate any cold cases that bear similarities to the string of slayings.
Sedgwick County District Judge Greg Waller read the charges during the hearing, which lasted about five minutes. A preliminary hearing was set for March 15, when Rader is likely to be arraigned.
Rader's only comments during the hearing were short "yes" and "no" answers to questions.
He was accompanied at the hearing by a temporary attorney. Waller appointed the state's public defender office to represent Rader.
I sure hope one of them gets him the death penalty.
Death penalty will not be in play unless they can prove he committed murders after its re-instatement in 1994. Hope they can.
During the years he committed those murders, nobody in the U.S. was old enough to earn the death penalty.
I hope this guy leads law enforcement to reevaluate their profiling. Supposedly serial killers, rapists, stalkers, etc are loners with limited social skills. BTK proves that theory wrong. The guy who stalked me for seven years got married and had a child within that time frame. I was told it couldn't be him because he didn't fit the classic profile. LE was wrong then and they were wrong again in this case. Time to reassess.
Civil suits to come. He owned a house for years, that'll be gone. His wife will lose everything they owned.
I think "LE" is going to have alot of egg on their faces over this one.
From KWCH 12 News
Judge Greg Waller read the 10 counts of first degree murder filed against Rader. He is accused of killing Joseph and Julie Otero, Josephine Otero, Joseph Otero, Jr., and Kathryn Bright in 1974. He's also charged with murdering Nancy Fox and Shirley Vian in 1977, Marine Hedge in 1985, Vicki Wegerle in 1986 and Delores Davis in 1991.
Heck, Bundy proved that wrong before this guy.
If he stopped prior to '94, it would be interesting to learn the reason.
she could file bankruptcy
I think "LE" is going to have alot of egg on their faces over this one.
______________
The voice from the hindsight committee speaks.
True.
True. Thats all any of us have is hindsight though. And I for one found it stunning to read how much time and effort they invested only to come to find he knew a number of the victims. Two of them had worked with him at Coleman.
ABC News says there may be as many as 3 cold later cases linked to BTK. (one of which may be elgible for the death penalty.)

You have an interesting and disturbing point. I feel we are using profiling as more of a "science" than is justified, especially when someone is overlooked because they didn't "fit the profile"
What's most surprising is that they took time off from their back-slapping and press conferences to file charges.
This could be true, but alot of depts. like to clean the books and pile on.
lol
