We adopted him from the pound when he was a puppy just under four years ago. He immediatley fit in with our family with no "adjustment". Our kids named him Balto, after the famous dog from the Alaskan tundra.
We have a huge yard and his body was made for running. He was happiest when chasing squirrels or rabbits.
He was my faithful companion, never leaving my side when I was at home. Duke, the Lab, lives for the kids. Balto lived for only me.
He developed a very quickly degenerative bone condition in his hind end only three weeks ago.
We recognized a very slight limp and took him to the vet. They prescribed pain killers that he only rarely needed.
On Friday afternoon, we noticed that his knees "clicked" when he walked. By Saturday night, he could barely stand.
By Monday morning, he was doubled over in pain.
We took him to the vet, where he died in my arms with a sigh of relief.
I'm very sorry.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Here's a picture of my family's new bulldog, Barkley. Maybe she will give you a smile.
So sorry BD.
OHhh...I'm so sorry. : ((
I know how it feels. I am about to face the same with one of my cats. He's the one who worships the ground I walk on.
It's hard.
My deepest condolences.
I know how it feels.
To Balto: [and all the other Good Dogs]
The only sorrow you ever bring is the day you leave.
A loss like this is very hard. My heart goes out to you.
I have a Great Pyrenees going through the same thing. Its one day at a time. Just remember how lucky that dog knew he was, by having you as his loyal escort through this existence.
i am so sorry to hear it.
It's so hard when we lose our little pals...
Here is an old piece that you may have heard before but it always speaks to my heart.
'The Rainbow Bridge'
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
I'm very sorry for your loss. People who aren't real pet lovers won't understand how our pets become so much a part of our lives.
And they'll never understand that their loss breaks our hearts just as much as losing a person.
The pet never knew there was a difference.
I understand and share your sense of loss ~

I know that losing him hurts you deeply, but just remember that sigh. He was telling you that he's not in pain anymore and that should give you some solace.

I'm so sorry. They are members of our family. He's running pain free like a puppy now and will be there to meet you someday.
