Lt. Gov. Norton says she won't run for governor (Colorado)

Colorado Lt. Gov. Jane Norton ended speculation that she would run for governor in 2006, saying today she had no plans to do so.

Norton, a Republican who served as executive director of the state Department of Public Health and Environment for four years before joining Gov. Bill Owens' ticket in 2002, had been mentioned as a possible candidate.

She did not elaborate on her decision.

Republican state Treasurer Mike Coffman has formed an exploratory committee for the office, and University of Denver President Marc Holtzman, a Republican, has said he will leave the school by the end of this year to help the party by either recruiting candidates or running for governor.

Potential Democratic candidates include Rep. Mark Udall, millionaire entrepreneur Rutt Bridges, former Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter and former Lt. Gov. Gail Schoettler, who narrowly lost to Owens in 1998.

Norton's not running probably due to Governor Owen's unpopularity with Republicans. They saw him as a sure bet to retain Nighthorse Campbell's senate seat, but he passed on it to run for president in '08. However, under his watch, Republicans lost that senate seat, a open house seat, and control of both state houses to the Democrats.

Forget about Tancredo; he's not running with his visit to NH last month. It's pretty much a two-man race between Treasurer Mike Coffman and University of Denver president, Marc Holtzman, the latter having a ton of money.

Salazar was in a solid position from the start, as I recall.

I told Bill, boy you wanna be president you best run for Senate (senators can't be president my left foot!) but noooooooo he had to screw up his family life and take the state party with it. Good job Bill, spectacular nose dive in a meager 2 years!

I like Coffman -- any word on what the other dude's like?

I prefer Scot McInnis or Bob Schafer to run for Governor.
