Chicago - Bodies Found at Home of Federal Judge

CHICAGO (AP) -- Authorities found two bodies at the home of a federal judge Monday night, and Chicago police and the FBI were investigating.

The bodies were found at the home of U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow, but the judge was uninjured, police spokesman Patrick Camden said.

He declined to elaborate.

FBI agents were assisting police but would provide no details.

Hale's sentencing hearing for soliciting a federal judge's murder and obstruction of justice has been scheduled for April 6. It was delayed in November pending a U.S. Supreme Court decision on whether judges have to rigidly conform to federal sentencing guidelines (the court ruled that they don't). Whether this will affect Hale's sentence (he was expected to get up to 20 years for the soliciting charge and up to 10 for the obstruction) is unknown.

I hope so.

Unfortunately I'm cynical enough to think that his defense lawyers are going to find a way to delay sentencing because it would be too prejudicial to sentence him now in the heat of the moment. And I wonder if this'll set up some kind of appeal (if there is such a thing) no matter what the sentence on the grounds that her peers came down on Hale too hard as a result of these murders.
