A large, drab green missile launcher aimed vigilantly skyward has become one of the more distinctive landmarks in the Washington suburb of Bethesda, Md.
The launcher claims a commanding position on the lawn at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock facility, a science and engineering center overlooking the Potomac River, the WASHINGTON POST will report on Tuesday.
The six non-nuclear missiles in the launcher could ``counter an inbound threat.''
Opinions about the upscale neighborhood's newest security system have varied.
Developing...
Should up the resale a bit, think about the safety in that neighborhood!
Too bad they don`t take that kind of defensive action on our southern boarder.
Nothing new here -- when we moved out of Washington into the wilds of Prince Georges' County in 1956, the place was all woods, swamps and tobacco fields -- mostly. While riding my bike one afternoon, I discovered a 120mm anti-aircraft battery tucked into the forest off Ardmore Road, approximately where the Landover Arena sits now. The NCOIC gave me the $5 tour and I was most impressed. I think the battalion converted to Nikes the next year and they gave up that site. But it was one of many ringing the capital at the time.
Lets hope they tripple guard those babies so they don't get hijacked and used againt anything of ours.
I'd prefer a 14' high reinforced conc. 36" wall w/ an 10' earth berm and 16' below...depending on terrain.
Drudge is a little slow on this one. The referenced missile battery was set up around six weeks ago, in plain view of the parkway. Looks like a small version of the Patriot system. The fire control radar van is not visible from the parkway but the David Taylor facility has plenty of areas in which to put one. IMHO, the whole setup is goblin bait.
Is it obvious that the Pentagon is still embarresed that they were able to be attacked? How about some interceptors on ready at Andrews on ready alert. Nah, makes too much sense.
wow... we need a Patriot Battery in every neighborhood
I doubt its guarded but they used 'The Club' so it should be OK
Obviously you missed my point. It was about initiative. Which we don`t seem to have on the Mexican border.
I agree more needs to be done on the border. But missiles? Come on. Perhaps your point was a bit obtuse.
There used to be a fair number of those kinds of things around south of Miami...probably a good idea to put them back.
"Perhaps your point was a bit obtuse."
Yeah, maybe.
Should be a Patriot battery right on the Mall. And it should have been there on Sept 12. We are at war. That would help drive home the message.
yeah, you don't be find things like that in the ghetto.
he said ... developing (must be sloooow film from the camera :-)
Q. What do Saddam and whasshername have in common?
A. They have both seen Patriot missiles up close.
Reno's back!
