PLEASE LET THOSE SPEAK WHO MIGHT KNOW MORE THAN YOU OF THE SUBJECT.

Problem is, everybody thinks they fall into that category... Lots of people with a disproportionally high opinion of their own opinion.

People don't like being oppressed. The people of Lebanon have discovered they're NOT a small minority of dissidents, but a majority which spans the entire Mideast.

I'm already having a great day. The people in Lebanon aren't afraid anymore. There's no way to stop this.

"The people of Lebanon felt free to take these steps. Exactly. And they felt free because of the USA."YES "USA"!!!

"Even Walid Jumblatt, who was as anti-American as they come, had suddenly come forward and credited the United States with Iraq's first popular election. They nay-sayers are backing themselves into a corner with no escape route. Let them."

People don't like being oppressed.

They saw what happend in Iraq and thought, "That could be us". The bombing that took place last week was their 9/11.

Since some are quoting Jefferson......: "1820 Dec. 26. "The disease of liberty is catching; those armies will take it in the south, carry it thence to their own country, spread there the infection of revolution and representative government, and raise its people from the prone condition of brutes to the erect altitude of man." (to Lafayette, Ford 12.190)"

"the outcry against an event like Tiannamin square in this day and age would be far to risky" surely you jest.

Not even Canada, Germany or France would put up with that and it behooves Syria not to discover how much of our total military assets are not in theater. They might nt be much by our standards, but by the standards of anywhere else on the planet, they are still formidable.

With a whole lot of the wit of Will Rodgers, just to add seasoning to the mix.

This is incredible and we have seen of late a total vindication of Bush's policies, but you will never hear that from the Left.

I don't know what kind of incantations have been whipped on the syrians but it sure is working. Perhaps we showed them pictures of saddams WMD going into syria and where they are parked. Who knows but we have not seen progress like this before.

Did we support any one side in the last Lebanese civil war? Would Bush support actively a pro-christian/pro-democracy side in a future civil war?

That's definitely heartening. But we know what happened to the guy that stared down that Chinese tank (he was executed). Lebanon is the buffer between Syria and Israel. Strategically, this is a nightmare scenario for Syria, that's why it doesn't make sense.

If the domino theory holds, then we should see a revolution in Damascus. For that reason, it would be suicidal for Syria to let the Lebanese people have their way with them, given the political events in Iraq and now Egypt ceding to democratic elections.

I've been getting attacked by one poster for injecting a little bit of perspective into this event. We can't evaluate it from the POV of the Lebanese people, alone. If we disregard Syria's POV, then sure, it looks like Prague Spring. If Syria is, indeed, fighting for its survival, they cannot survive without Lebanon. That's why I'm skeptical.

democracy in Iraq, Libya gives up WMD's, Syria being pressured to get out of Lebanon, Egypt heading toward democracy, the world leaning on Iran . . . .

this could be the turning point for democracy in the Middle East.

or the End of Days.

Very nice.

And if she's the face of the new Lebanon, that country is a stone cold fox. ;-)
