DCF has the authority to place Terri in protective custody without Greer's approval. Let's hope they do this when Greer dismisses their motion for intervention.
well this is interesting, if the DCF have their own power, they could have just filed those papers and stated, we are investigating and we will take the full 60 days...but they don't do that, they are asking for a ruling. They play strange games down in Florida.

Just when one thinks the conservative columnists writing for your paper can’t get any more bizarre, along comes a disgusting article like that of Michael Reagan (Mar. 2) concerning the circumstance of Terri Schiavo. Not only does he use several colossal distortions and shallow logic to try and make his point, he reveals once again the flawed understanding of real compassion characteristic of the right-wing crowd.
Reagan tries to convince us that Schiavo is "fully alert, smiling, and reacting to her parent’s presence." This is absolutely not true. I admit to not having all the facts, (opinions abound), but from all I’ve seen and heard this lady has been in a vegetative state for 15 long years, requiring around-the-clock care.
A multitude of doctors and experts have examined her time and time again, always with the same analysis. She is void of any cognitive functions. The picture he tries to paint for us is a slightly-disabled woman who is at the mercy of a bad ex-husband and some liberal judges who are out to kill her in a most horrible way. It sounds like Reagan is simply trying to take some cheap shots at liberals.
If it’s true Schiavo is somewhat functional and capable of feeling pain, that would seem even more reason to let go of her with some kind of dignity, for it means she has been suffering all these years with no way to communicate. And for those who choose to use Biblical principles to verify their position, our faith tells us there is something far better on the other side.
It doesn’t appear the crowd making all the noise over this sad and complex question is doing so because they care that much. It seems to be rooted in an on-going pattern they have of grabbing on to a divisive social issue and milking it for all it’s worth for personal and political gain.
For those concerned with others having a life, there are a multitude of ways to work towards social and economic justice, seeing that everyone has equal opportunity towards life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Save Terri Schiavo's Life says Fédération Internationale des Associations Médicales Catholiques
ROME, March 9 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Press Released Statement on Terri Schindler-Schiavo from Fédération Internationale des Associations Médicales Catholiques -- World Federation of Catholic Medical Associations:
Save Terri's Life
Terri Schindler-Schiavo is condemned to die of starvation and dehydration unless a new court decision intervenes.
She is not guilty of any crime, except to be a burden for her husband and for a selfish society. She is not even clinically in a permanent vegetative state, but she has been refused a re-examination of her clinical condition.
The legal basis for this inhuman decision is that she allegedly had once expressed the wish not to be fed "artificially". However, her parents and siblings contend that this is not her will and that she, in fact, would follow the clear teaching of the Catholic Church about assisted nutrition and hydration. They raise the possibility that her husband and legal guardian has manifestedly abused her.
However, the real core of the problem is the attempt to decide about the right to life of a human being, not on the basis of her/his personal dignity, but on an external evaluation of the quality of life.
The World Federation of Catholic Medical Associations is deeply concerned for the possible consequences of such a precedent setting decision in the United States system of law. In fact, if Terri, an innocent person, can be condemmed to death, every person whose life will be considered of insufficient "quality" by a guardian or the court will be in danger of euthanasia performed by withdrawal of basic and ordinary care.
The importance of this case goes beyond this deplorable circumstance. It will open the floodgates to euthanasia in the United States, at all ages, without even a legislative decision.
The World Federation of Catholic Medical Associations, aware of the risks of this decision for both society and the future of the medical profession, strongly appeals to the United States authorities to react immediately and effectively to save Terri's life and to avoid the inevitable consequences.
The World Federation of Catholic Medical Associations appeals to the Bishops of the United States to mobilize every resource and influence of the Catholic Church to counteract this impending tragedy.
Following the teaching of Pope John Paul II and the evidence of medical sciences, we believe that no human being, including those in the permanent vegetative state, can be denied the respect due to a human person by provision of food and water, without which any person, regardless of his/her state of health, would be condemned to death.
Such a perversion of medicine will be the source of discrimination against other human beings, with enormous risks for human rights and democracy.

does anyone have the phone number for DCF in Florida? I know I should have it but there may be others too who need to be told to call!!
DCF may have done the smart thing by giving Greer a chance to grant them the 60 days. Now, DCF looks courteous and, if they take Terri into custody, they dodge being charged with having acted "recklessly".
I think out of respect for the jurisdiction of court they filed to intervene.
If Greer says "forget you", then they have other means.
It is only if the smell a rat like we all do and put her in protective custody.

Wednesday, her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, were dealt another loss in the long-running, contentious legal battle when a state judge denied two more of their motions, including one that asked for new medical tests to determine if the 41-year-old woman has more brain activity than previously thought.
A DCF supervisor, Susan McPhee, testified that the accusations include denying her some medical treatment and therapy, and isolating her in her room with the blinds closed.
"This is a heightened situation because we are talking about the life of Terri Schiavo," DCF attorney Kelly McKibben told Circuit Judge George W. Greer in a hearing, adding that she believes the court cannot impede an agency investigation.
But the husband's attorney, George Felos, argued that the DCF has no legal right to interfere and Greer has no jurisdiction to allow it. He said he believes the agency's last-minute attempt is politically motivated, especially because dozens of previous complaints to DCF have failed to yield any evidence of abuse.
"DCF is simply acting as an arm of the executive branch to try to undo a court order they don't like," Felos told reporters. Greer said he would rule on the DCF request as early as Thursday.
In Tallahassee, a House committee approved a bill requiring doctors to provide nutrition and hydration to incapacitated patients who didn't leave an advance directive. It passed 7-4 on a party-line vote and still needs approval from two more committees before facing the full House.

That is the whole distortion of information on this.
I have posted to several main news organizations that have posted articles with "right to die" in the titles.
I have told them that a little investigative work will show that this is in NO WAY a right to die case.
I referred them to and commended the Empire Journal. They deserve a Pulitzer.

Against what bill? fill me in right now. I just got home from a horrible day in Children's court in Los ANgeles. We have ended up with temporary custody of a 6 year old grandson.( we are sr citizens too.* sigh*) I am exhausted, upset, and heartsick all at the same time. None the less I need to keep going for Terri.Looking to Jesus for my strength and for Terri's life!!!!

Not only does DCF have the authority, they HAVE A DUTY!!!!!
Greer can spout all he wants about the allegations being "nothing new". They are. DCF knows this, and they have got to be getting ticked off about this.
