HONG KONG -- An upscale Hong Kong grocery store is being prosecuted after a customer allegedly discovered 575 beetles in a jar of cereal he bought, officials and media reports said yesterday. The customer, lawyer Philip Dykes, said the breakfast cereal was "too organic for my liking," according to the South China Morning Post.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has charged the Great grocer store with sale of "food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded by the purchaser," said Emily Mak, a department spokeswoman.
The charge carries a maximum fine of 10,000 Hong Kong dollars, $1,589 Cdn, and up to three months imprisonment, according to the Apple Daily newspaper.
The A.S. Watson Group, which runs the store, has pleaded not guilty.
A spokeswoman for Great said the store began selling the product -- Bunalun Organic Vanilla Granola Breakfast Cereal -- in 2001 and the case "is the first complaint of this nature."

The eggs that were attached to the grain hatched. Ever wonder where the fruit flies come from when you bring fruit into the sealed house? They hatch from eggs on the fruit.

Seems like every time I turn on the tube or listen to the radio there's something on about Orientals eating far stranger stuff than this.
Aren't plain, ordinary beetles sorta plebian for them?

Actually, there is a food made in America that has a pretty high (but less than the maximum allowed) content of bug parts and critter crap.
Plain old ordinary corn chips. You know, the bandito type.
