A day in the life of President Bush (2/27/05)
WhiteHouse.gov; Yahoo News Photos ^ | 2/27/05

Posted on 02/27/2005 5:45:51 PM PST by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended St. John's Chruch in Washington this morning. The nation's governors are in Washington this week for their winter National Governors' Association meeting, and the President and First Lady are hosting a formal dinner tonight in the White House for them. I waited as long as poosible hoping some photos of the dinner would appear on Yahoo. But it's after 5:30pm Pacific, and none have appeared yet. So thise Dose is going up without them.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger waved the green flag to start the NASCAR Nextel Cup race in Fontana, but left shortly afterwards. No word on whether or not he was to fly immediately to Washington for the dinner. Look for various cabinet secretaries to speak at various sessions of the governors' meeting during the week. Although there is no word as to their schedules, the President and Vice President often attend at least one Governors' Association session.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the President's Address to the Slovak people, 2/24/05

I'm proud to stand in this great square, which has seen momentous events in the history of Slovakia and the history of freedom. Almost 17 years ago, thousands of Slovaks gathered peacefully in front of this theater. They came, not to welcome a visiting President, but to light candles, to sing hymns, to pray for an end to tyranny and the restoration of religious liberty.

From the hotel to our left, communist authorities watched thousands of candles shining in the darkness -- and gave the order to extinguish them. The authorities succeeded in crushing that protest. But with their candles and prayers, the people of Bratislava lit a fire for freedom that day, a fire that quickly spread across the land. And within 20 months, the regime that drove Slovaks from this square would itself be driven from power. By claiming your own freedom, you inspired a revolution that liberated your nation and helped to transform a continent.

Slovaks know the horror or tyranny, so you're working to bring the hope of freedom to people who have not known it. You've sent peacekeepers to Kosovo, and election observers to Kiev. You've brought Iraqis to Bratislava to see firsthand how a nation moves from dictatorship to democracy. Your example is inspiring newly-liberated people. You're showing that a small nation, built on a big idea, can spread liberty throughout the world.

At this moment, Slovak soldiers are serving courageously alongside U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some have given their lives in freedom's cause. We honor their memory. We lift them up in our prayers. Words can only go so far in capturing the grief of their families and their countrymen. But by their sacrifice, they have helped purchase a future of freedom for millions. Many of you can still recall the exhilaration of voting for the first time after decades of tyranny. And as you watched jubilant Iraqis dancing in the streets last month, holding up ink-stained fingers, you remembered Velvet Days. For the Iraqi people, this is their 1989, and they will always remember who stood with them in their quest for freedom.

Not to bash FoxNews, it's still the best cable news out there. I just wish they'd give more details on a story.

I was heartened last night to see Col. Hunt and Maj. Bob Bevelaqua being interviewed by Geraldo. They were asked what they thought of the Iranian spokesperson who came out saying the Iran would only use the nuke materials for peaceful uses, give the spent fuel back to Russia etc. Col. Hunt actually said "he's an idiot" on TV, LOLOL!! And Bevelaqua said "I can't top that assessment" and went on to compare this Iranian spokesman to Baghdad Bob.

I really like Col. Hunt. He's a no bull-$hit, call it like he sees 'em military man. Very refreshing. Once on Fox&Friends he said that such and such guy ought to be told to "shut up". FOFL!!

A country hick?? Nah, I see deer all of the time up here! We live right on the edge of the forest. (Cows, not as often.) Poor cows probably got freaked out...

Let me just hop a jet tomorrow morning and I'll help you paint, I'm sure the boss won't mind!

Hi Prairie--

If you really want to get upset at the libs and the news, read "Do Gooders" by Mona Charen. Shows what's REALLY behind many of their agendas, programs, etc. Unbelievable.

I'm so sick of the news (believe it or not!) I watch old reruns of ER, Judging Amy, and NYPD Blues every day. Sometimes I check for "breaking news" at the top of the hour but that's about it most days. (Mr.h is relieved; I htink he was ready to commit me around election time because of my news obsession--LOL!)

Psalm 91

    1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
       Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
       2I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress;
       My God, in Him I will trust."

       3Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
       And from the perilous pestilence.
       4He shall cover you with His feathers,
       And under His wings you shall take refuge;
       His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
       5You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
       Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
       6Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
       Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
       7A thousand may fall at your side,
       And ten thousand at your right hand;
       But it shall not come near you.
       8Only with your eyes shall you look,
       And see the reward of the wicked.

       9Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,
       Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
       10No evil shall befall you,
       Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
       11For He shall give His angels charge over you,
       To keep you in all your ways.
       12In their hands they shall bear you up,
       Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
       13You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
       The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

       14"Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
      I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
       15He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
       I will be with him in trouble;
       I will deliver him and honor him.
       16With long life I will satisfy him,
       And show him My salvation."

I've gotten so bored with TV infotainment, even Fox.

Am I ever glad to find someone else who feels this way. All the talking heads just blather on and on about the most empty, meaningless things. They pretend to know everything about everything, yet they are just so predictable. We have far better and more well-rounded discussions here on FR than I could ever find on TV anymore.

RE: FOX . . . and they get sooooo obsessed with the most meaningless things, namely, Michael Jackson. I wish they'd actually discuss some issues in depth; seems the most they do is just a few minutes, and even if they're 'fair and balanced' you really don't get in-depth knowledge of any issue. I'm with you--I get more out of the discussions here on FR.

Exactly what I mean. And FReepers are excellent and cross referencing information, tying up links, connecting the dots. It's exciting. TV news, while they are still useful for breaking news, is mostly boring for just the reasons you mention.

I was pretty nervous for him for a while there, but I figured he was busy...

But he's forgiven for being out of contact, now that he's home safe! They had a very emotional trip back, they were accompanying several soldiers who had been killed in action.

FOX is part serious news and part tabloid. With Greta and Geraldo on there, it sometimes seems that the tabloid side takes over full time. On the other hand, FOX has done by far the best and most sustained reporting on the UN oil-for-food and child rape stories.
