Republican Disowns Lesbian Daughter (Keyes)

Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

LowOiL was able to track down the info, which was in your post #352:
Maya Keyes interview on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, Monday, February 14, 2005

"WOLF BLITZER: Has there been a complete falling-out now between you and your father?

"MAYA KEYES: No. I love my parents very much. And they love me. And they disagree with what I'm doing at the moment. And, as such, they can't support me in this activity, but they are still always going to love me. I know that."

"TODD: A source close to the Keyes family says this whole situation has been devastating for everyone concerned, but the source says, through it all, Maya and her parents are still speaking . . . ."

That should about sum it up for the people who are so lovingly concerned about the Keyes "not communicating with" or "disowning" their daughter.

Unless they can't read plain English.

Ridiculous cliche! Keyes is doing just that. You don't enable homosexual behavior or any type of sinful behavior.

What does cutting off her college tuition have to do with enabling homosexual behavior?

Just goes to show that Newt and Dick has a lot more class than Mr. Keyes.

Exactly.

Newt and Dick Cheney show that you can disagree with a person's live style while still treating them with love and respect.

Keyes is a mean-spirited self-righteous SOB who gives Christianity a bad name.

Like I said, we can see you don't like Keyes, yes, it is that obvious.

I posted her words about the way things went down.

The parents stuck with the daughter, (although they vehemently opposed her choice while keeping it private within the family) until SHE chose to make it public. Only then did the relationship "get a lot worse." Only then were they forced to act. That is her words not her parents'.

Those are the facts, the daughter played the 'publicly proud of her sin card'. Lot's of tortured justifications and complex toe-dancing indeed.

This is Keyes' business (my problem is with the fact that he chose to play along when Mary Cheney was singled out, even though he himself was the parent of a lesbian and knew it at the time) - but I have to wonder if this would have been handled the same way had Maya's sin been heterosexual in nature.

I would have to check back, but I think her story has changed a little bit since she first went public with this. The reason so many have the impression that she was completely cut off was because, if I remember correctly, she originally presented it that way.

If that is correct, I wonder what prompted her to change her story.

Changed what? I thought someone up in the thread quoted her from CNN that she was talking with her parents? Has that changed?

You better leave the GOP than.

Leave the GOP than what?

What does that even mean?

Did you mean "better leave the GOP, then?"

At least spew your bile using proper English....it's far more palatable.

It's funny how everything the Keyes-bashers say Keyes is, they themselves are.

If I'm not mistaken, she communicated on her blog a couple of weeks ago that she had indeed been fired from her job, kicked out of the place where she was living, cut off from school funding, and basically disowned - I thought she even said her parents weren't speaking to her (I could be mistaken about a lot of this though). If the quotes from CNN are more recent than that and accurate, she seems to have softened a bit.
