Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

Try not to hold onto them too tightly, Lisa. I had a terrible time releasing my sons, especially to the Lord. I paid for that dearly. Thankfully they are all out on their own but all have been divorced and two are separated from their oldest children. It's been such a heartbreak for all of us. I've been denied these grandsons for 15 years. We keep in touch but it's not the same as actually watching them growing up. They need to be independent of us, not dependent on us. I wish I had learned that earlier.
First of all, I wouldn't break off communication with her.

Spare the rod and spoil the child is scriptural, where he probably found it in the first place.
What makes a forum interesting is when those that disagree with your views can back them up with reasoned responses. You don't give Biblical references because you can't find them to back up your position it seems so you go to something else.
And I note your late addition to the thread, but that's okay, I'm sure.
I respond when I have time. Notice that my responses usually didn't just consist of two cent replies. I had to gather verses together and that takes time (you should try it).
I'll stand by my statements. I don't think good Christians stop talking to their child because they are gay. And, perhaps you haven't noticed the transcript of Keyes daughter, but they ARE still speaking, despite the mis-reporting of this article.
Yes I noticed way before you did. I never stated a position on this thread about "speaking" terms... I don't see what this has to do with my post to you. Also, usually in situations like this, the child will stop talking to the parents, not vice-versa.
So you should write to Keyes and tell HIM that he's not a good enough Christian for YOU. After all, he's still speaking to his daughter. And she's gay. It sounds like that would be your position. And you're welcome to it. Disgraceful a position though it is.
Point out where I said anything in my posts about "talking" to his daughter. Any of my posts for that matter on this thread... You can't forgive if they ask for it, if you aren't listening. I have clearly supported my belief that a father has the right to not support a family member of age in homosexual orientation. I defend his right to kick her out of the house because of it. I defend his right to be the master of his own home and to set the rules of such home. I have supported my arguments with scripture.
You seem to be all screech and no substance on this subject. I will dust the dirt off and bid you a good day.

I wish you could adhere to that advice with the word of Christ as your guide. I don't mind admonishing one bit and I grow in wisdom because of it, but the only truth I accept is the Bible's, your wisdom is just not panning out I must honestly admit.

A family friend . . . says Maya has not been kicked out of the family home, but she is no longer welcomed to stay at the downtown Chicago apartment that Keyes and members of his new political organization use.

You, like most folks on this thread, only hear HER side of what went on. You need to get both sides of the story before making a judgement. Cheez.
You have a reading comprehension problem. So sad.
I've repeatedly stated that I don't blame Keyes for not supporting (financially) his daughter. His not speaking to her, which was in the article but we later found out was not true, is what I was speaking to.
But carry on. Your posts have proven exactly what I was saying about some particular form of Christianity which condemns people without knowing a whit what they are talking about.

My thoughts, exactly.
I mean. What good does that accomplish? A parent can still tell their children the differences between right and wrong while still allowing their children to make up their own minds. That's part of the job of being a parent. I've heard of rebellious children, I will freely admit that I was one of them, but it's absolutely absurd to hear about rebellious parents.
That was not the only thing you seemed to bypass... You have made comments about my posts, but admit that you bypassed them... Have a good day Maam...
