Republican Disowns Lesbian Daughter (Keyes)

Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

My understanding of that is a lesbian doesn't get what she needs from a same sex parent, a mother. Gay men don't get what they need from a father. I don't know how true any of this is but it does make sense. You go looking for someone who can fill that void.

Some of you refuse to read what his daughter has to say. They have not stopped communicating with or loving their daughter. She knows they love her. They have not disowned her; they are just not funding her lifestyle choices. SHE made that choice. She knew her parents are Christians and cannot embrace her lifestyle. They still love HER and she knows it. Please go back and read what she said about the whole thing, not what that rag The Guardian has to say.

Actually, somewhere in scripture it talks about the father's sin being perpatuated for four generations. BUT it says sexual sin is 10 generations. Must be He knows sexual sin is harmful to our families.

Reminds me of the South Park episode with the "gay" dog.

"Sit Sparky. Stay Sparky!. Good, now....don't be gay! Don't be gay Sparky.

Sounds ridiculous with humans too.

I take that to mean that if Osama Bin Laden was your father or son that you would be supportive and sweet to him?

No, I wouldn't. I would try to turn him from what he is doing, but I wouldn't abandon him.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think this is a shift left. I Keys brings his own problems on with reckless speech.

I consider Bush's spending and border issues is a shift left.

The leftist rag has nothing to gain from this. They've shown they can be just as repugnant toward gays as they portray you, me and everyone else on the Right. I refer you to the Gannon/Guckert saga they keep trying to attach legs to.

So how do you seperate the sin from the sinner? A person is not an empty shell. You know a person by his behaviors. You love homosexuals? You wanna explain just how this is done?

Homosexuality is a mental disease. This woman desires to insult, weaken, and embarass her father in public

She may want to do that, but I think you are going over the line in proclaiming homosexuality to be a mental disease.

Having a mental illness does not have anything to do with sexuality.

So how do you seperate the sin from the sinner?

You figure it out. You've proclaimed to know all about what makes a good Christian, in this thread.

My dear pastor and his wife threw their son out of the house because of his drinking, fast lifestyle. It straightened him out and he is the best husband and dad and friend ever. Tough love is tough for everyone.

Love the sinner, hate the sin; by that, I mean, that it is not a matter of love and hate for a person. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean I hate them. I can still proclaim to be a good christian, based on the idea that i disagree with their choice in life. If I hated the person and their sin, I cannot claim the moral high ground. If I love the person but disagree with their choices, then I am entitled to take that moral high ground.

That's not the point. And I made no such proclamation. There are things I understand thru my Christian experience and there are many things I still have to learn. You make a statement that frankly lends itself to furthur explanation.

Yes I know exactly how to do that but many people say things that they have no idea what they're talking about. And by your non-answer you appear to be one of them.

Well thanks for at least giving a better answer than the first one. However it is still a generic answer. Keyes will not allow a defiant sinner-living sibling in his household. I don't see where that is hating the sinner.

What would you do with a proud-self-proclaiming defiant lesbian daughter who says your Christian ideals are wholly misguided and demands that you accept her perverted lifestyle?
