SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger acknowledged using steroids during his years as a champion body builder and said he would still have used them even knowing what he knows now about the adverse effects of the performance-enhancing drugs.
In an interview to be broadcast Sunday, Schwarzenegger told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, "I have no regrets about it, because at that time, it was something new that came on the market, and we went to the doctor and did it under doctors' supervision. We were experimenting with it. It was a new thing. So you can't roll the clock back and say, 'Now I would change my mind on this.'" The former seven-time Mr. Olympia said he would not encourage drug use because it sent the wrong message to children. But he said he had no problem with athletes taking nutritional supplements and other legal substances to improve their performance.
"People should take food supplements, people should be able to take the vitamins and all of the nutritious stuff that is available, but stay away from drugs," he said.
Since becoming governor in November, 2003, Schwarzenegger has maintained his ties to the bodybuilding world. He serves as executive editor of Flex Magazine, and will preside next weekend over The Arnold Classic, an annual bodybuilding festival in Columbus, Ohio that still bears his name.
In the interview, Schwarzenegger said he hoped that over time, bodybuilders would stop relying on steroid use.
"Of course we want to keep the sport clean," he said. "It says 'bodybuilding,' not 'body-destroying.' It's bodybuilding. Of course we want to go in that direction."
The Republican governor said that he had vetoed a bill requiring the state's high school coaches to teach about the dangers of steroids and illegal substances because the bill lumped legal performance-enhancing food supplements in with illegal drugs. He also said it was already illegal to sell performance-enhancing drugs in California schools.
The interview was taped Friday for broadcast on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Portions of it were reported on the ABCNews.com Web site.

Absurd. Sheesh!
You forget that much of his support came from democrats and independents and that many Republicans and conservatives did not embrace him...
so why is the idea that he couldn't compete on a fair playing field, ie; not in a winner take all horserace that the recall was more like, so absurd?
an endorsement in the can, so to speak, for someone who hasn't said he will run again is a heck of an inducement to run, yet he still won't commit, even tho the skids are greased.
Like I have said for a long time, stick a fork in the CA GOP and its long time conservative base, the moderates and New majority and 19th Holers at the Country Clubs are doing all they can to do just that.
The guy became huge from being a skinny guy in less then two years. He ended up becomming a professional wrestler in Japan and very famous in the 80's !
I've heard that he's actually had sex with a woman. He's a monster!!!!
Really, in the context for this article, they're just willing guinea pigs or labrats. Arnold should pray hard he doesn't end up like former Oakland Raider Lyle Alzado.
Yeah, he'd never beat McClintock in a Republican primary.
Go Ahnold!
This is old, old news.
Well, hmmm, that may be in the not-so-far-off future LOL And the benefit would be: they wouldn't have to pay them exorbitant salaries. Just a few wires, chips, sensors, appendages, and maybe a new coat of paint each year. It would also cut out the "camp followers" - the women who, well you know!
Yeah, he'd never beat McClintock in a Republican primary.

Well, now , we'll never know now , will we?
Dems don't usually vote for R's in primaries anyway , so you might just be surprised who would win. This move was already anticipated so no big deal. If, as I suspect, the gUb does not stand for re-election, geee , who would be the CA GOP nominee be then.. RFK Jr. ? not so far fetched at the rate the party is aligning with the left.. and all with an R by its name.
The irony, if they did have a Republican primary, and arnie actually had to run, and he won,
Then he'd have to hope the CA GOP didn't stick a knife in his back like the CA GOP party leadership did to the winners of recent R primaries.
talk about stacking a deck..
How's your brushing up on all the issues going? ;-)
How about them toll roads being proposed?
Who should pay for the Bay Bridge cost overruns and does a seismic retrofit bond seem the only way to go?
I'm sure a few more billion of long-term debt doesn't concern you at all. It doesn't seem to concern a lot of R's much of late.
We could talk about reforms too, and initiatives, but let's not sweat the details.
Seems to be a pattern in California, as a lot of 'well-informed' voters didn't seem to care about diddly except a Q factor the size of Rhode Island during the Recall, and one without any experience in government, except for supporting Prop 49 and the Health Council at the WH, kind of ironic now that ya look at the article.
yup , old news.
Have you considered a retrofit?
Why would I care about a few more billion? I'm a rich Republican!
Reforms? Initiatives? Other than working the old petition signing table tomorrow, I have nothing to do with them. How about you?
Schwarzenegger went public on his steroid use, what 10 - 15 years ago? I think the writer is headline crashing the Bonds/Canseco bruhaha.
and as usual, you fail to answer the questions posed to you. kind of like dealing with Caltrans. ;-)
btw, we all do what we can, stay dry.
Why is ABC News and lil Stephy asking him those questions, and why is he offering himself up so readily. anything to push his 'plans', even at the risk of opening old wounds.
Rich, huh? how come ya don't pay other folks to pass them initiatives around then and go play golf instead. lol
have a good one.
How about he just cooks up some bathtub crank and goes out on a mad rampage? Would you like that, too?
The guy just admitted that he's a drug felon who committed his crimes while he was a legal alien trying to obtain citizenship. People are deported for a lot less, everyday. And you think it's a "good thing", and he should be governor of the most populous state in the Union?
That's disgusting. As is the use of anabolic steroids for competition.
In the early 90s I studied the use of steroids for enhancing physique. The conclusion I came to, and I think it is valid, is that there is a relatively safe dosage of steroids for optimal results.
The problem with the bodybuilding community came from an unsophisticated mentality. A man, who already has an unusual fixation with physical size, would see good results from a small injection or from taking 2 pills. The reasoning was if 2 pills were good, 12 would be incredible. If a shot of dianabol every 10 days was great, then a double shot of dianabol every 5 days would be incredible!
Chemistry doesn't necessarily work that way. It's that kind of mentality that caused lots of physical problems - damaged internal organs - liver, heart, etc.
Agreed on the mentality thing..
there are medicinal uses for steroids and in safe doses, they do the job intended.
But a lot of folks do abuse them.. in the hope for quick significants gains, and never weigh the costs.
Don't get me wrong - using steroids just for cosmetic effect is abuse. I am just saying there is a way to get optimal results with minor risk (short and long term).
That was true in 1990 when I did my homework, and with advanmces in tech, I am sure its more true now. The thing is, the abusers, by and large, aren't scientists or scientifically minded and are fixated with size (its mostly a mental problem, I suspect).
So if 2 pills makes my muscles big, then 10 will make me enormous. Then 10 pills 2x a week will be just the ticket! But after a spell of that (and the drugs compound - abusers rarely stick with one drug and move on to other ones as the body gets used to the chemistry and results aren't that good), these rocket scientists wnd uop with damaged liver and kidneys, and enlarged heart, and ripped tendons (steroids help the muscle heal tissue damage faster, helping build bigger muslces faster after workouts, but they don't make tendons any stronger - whenever I see a lot of tendon related injuries, I suspect steroid abuse).
The thing is, to me, that seriois steroid abuse in baseball probably doesn't make a 5 homerun into a 45 homerun hitter. It's a game of skill, mostly. But the added strength probably does make a 40+ homerun hitter into 60+ homerun hitter. A shame.
No conflict of interest there. Nope. Couldn't be.

According to Schwarzeneggers Statement of Economic Interests, he had extensive financial ties to the PEDS industry when he assumed office in November 2003. Californias Political Reform Act states that an elected official must disqualify himself from taking any governmental action on a matter which could significantly impact his economic interests.
According to his disclosure statement, Schwarzenegger earned more than $100,000 last year from Classic Productions Inc., based in Worthington, Ohio. Using the trade name Schwarzenegger-Lorimer Productions, Classic Productions is producing a fitness expo this coming March in Columbus known as the Arnold Classic.
Jim Lorimer, current owner of Classic Productions, says that when Schwarzenegger became governor, he divested his stock in the company and he is no longer a corporate officer.
The exact arrangements are confidential, Lorimer says, but [Schwarzenegger] receives no income [from participating].
Classic Productions advertising campaign for the Arnold Classic focuses on Schwarzeneggers active participation in it. The events primary sponsors are PEDS sellers, such as Twinlab, MuscleTech and Bodytronics-Pinnacle. Last year, according to the disclosure, Schwarzenegger received income from 18 manufacturers and distributors of PEDS. Lorimer says that these companies are all paid sponsors of the Arnold Classic.
Well, Waspman, I'm all for accuracy. But I must admit, I never would have caught that one! ROFL.
How about he just cooks up some bathtub crank and goes out on a mad rampage? Would you like that, too?

Either you totally missed the point of the post, or you are a hard core liberal Dem who cannot stand the idea of California's destroyed economy and thriving welfare state, being replaced by a real, efficient government as it once was. Maybe we should bring back Gray Davis for you ???
This is why dey must always whet dere finger an stick it up in dere air to detect whiffs of stuff, ya know!!!
