SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger acknowledged using steroids during his years as a champion body builder and said he would still have used them even knowing what he knows now about the adverse effects of the performance-enhancing drugs.
In an interview to be broadcast Sunday, Schwarzenegger told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, "I have no regrets about it, because at that time, it was something new that came on the market, and we went to the doctor and did it under doctors' supervision. We were experimenting with it. It was a new thing. So you can't roll the clock back and say, 'Now I would change my mind on this.'" The former seven-time Mr. Olympia said he would not encourage drug use because it sent the wrong message to children. But he said he had no problem with athletes taking nutritional supplements and other legal substances to improve their performance.
"People should take food supplements, people should be able to take the vitamins and all of the nutritious stuff that is available, but stay away from drugs," he said.
Since becoming governor in November, 2003, Schwarzenegger has maintained his ties to the bodybuilding world. He serves as executive editor of Flex Magazine, and will preside next weekend over The Arnold Classic, an annual bodybuilding festival in Columbus, Ohio that still bears his name.
In the interview, Schwarzenegger said he hoped that over time, bodybuilders would stop relying on steroid use.
"Of course we want to keep the sport clean," he said. "It says 'bodybuilding,' not 'body-destroying.' It's bodybuilding. Of course we want to go in that direction."
The Republican governor said that he had vetoed a bill requiring the state's high school coaches to teach about the dangers of steroids and illegal substances because the bill lumped legal performance-enhancing food supplements in with illegal drugs. He also said it was already illegal to sell performance-enhancing drugs in California schools.
The interview was taped Friday for broadcast on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Portions of it were reported on the ABCNews.com Web site.

I wonder if Maria regrets him using them?
I don't know how anyone could be surpirsed about that?

I sure am not, and I wish he would load up on them, pick up his Konan The Barbarian sword, and go clean out the State Legislature of every lib he can find....
Thank You!!! Konan, our Governorator...!!!
A little rewrite,, FRom a political angle
In the interview, Schwarzenegger said he hoped that over time, bodybuilders democRats would stop relying on steroid use OPM.
Headline is slightly misleading - it isn't in context. Almost like what they did with the "admire Hitler" quote.
He outed himself in a past autobiography. He said he chomped on anything his Dr's gave him. He drank beer, ate pizza and smoked pot too...
I posted title as found, but that caught my eye as well, re: the 'twist' in the last half of title.
The election mill is rumbling and it's No Holds Barred .. it would appear. Imagine if Gray Davi$ had discovered steroids, he'd still be Gub. ;-)
or maybe it's an attempt at anything goes to pump up ABC News ratings for Georgy Boy and This Bleak Week in Washington..
Arnold has been admitting that for 30 years. Ridiculous for ABC to question him on it now, like it's some new revolution.
Er, "revelation".
I remember when the late Bob Hoffman of Strength and Health magazine wrote about steroid use in the 1960s and how it should not be tolerated. In those days none of the bodybuilders had the physiques they have today. Just look at some of the female body builders. It is totally ridiculous. Either make them legal or make them illegal with a lifetime ban if violated. Otherwise we are just peeing in the wind.
He may not regret it but his heart and his wife may.
Heck, if ya listen to Jose canseco. steroids are here to stay and will be for a long time, fans want to see juiced up 'athletes' smacking balls into low earth orbit.
I don't plan on watching much baseball this year, which is normal for me for quite a few years.
yo arnold maybe you can regret failing on your oath to the USC
One can never be too precise about this sort of thing, but I always thought the expression was "... peeing into the wind!"
Which kinda reminds me of most of Arnold's efforts at solving CA's fiscal problems by compound borrowing and locking up 1/5th of our natural resorces in a mindless Sierra-Nevada CONservancy just to make Bobby Kennedy, Jr. happy!!!
Yet CA's Repub Party has slavishly voted to help him avoid ANY POSSIBLE PRIMARY CHALLENGE!!! (cause he knows he'd never make it through a Republican primary)
But hey! I'll rejoin the party someday when it get's it's collective head out of it's Countryclub/Hollywood steroid celebrity swoon cloud!!! (notice how nicely I cleaned that up?)
Try ze purple kooolaid, it's yummy. ;-)
Bravo for telling it like it is! Too many on FR see this monster as a hero because he has an R in front of his name. Change it to a D, and they would be crucifying him.
"Djah, I took it the ahhs. So vhat? Vhy are lahhffink, George?"
LOL.. Good thing I got that multilingual decoder ring update.. ;-)
