DOUGLASVILLE, GA (AP) -- A deputy died after being shot in the head in a shooting that also killed another man.
Deputy Blake Gammill was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center on Thursday night, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident began around 10:30 p.m. when authorities went to a home in Douglas County just south of Interstate 20 to serve a search and arrest warrant against Jimmy Bilbo, a former Douglas County deputy who was accused last year of child molestation.
The deputies were about to take Bilbo into custody when his stepfather appeared out of a back room and opened fire, hitting the deputy in the face. Authorities returned fire, killing Bilbo's stepfather, who was identified as Gerald Greene.
Douglas County District Attorney David McDade said Gammill had been on the force for eight years. He is survived by a wife and two young children.
Bilbo was not hurt in the shooting and was taken into custody.
Bilbo had been free on bond in the child molestation case. But deputies came to his home because he had been seen leaving a mall with a juvenile that afternoon, authorities said.

Sick, just plain sick.
Prayers on the way for this guys family and his coworkers. I am convinced that serving search and arrest papers are the most dangerous part of an officers job.
Just today my mom emailed me this link:

That suspect was wanted by my agency btw. Good news.

Prayers esp seeing you are in the same line of work as the Officer who lost his life, and prayers for your continued safety.
When you guys run a check on a guy on a traffic stop do warrents go out nationwide or just for participating states.
If you can't share that info I understand. I think it should be Nationwide.
I listen to our lil town, Oregon Coast, scanner and like the fact that everything from A to Z comes up on a traffic per request check.
You guys have my total respect as you have to deal with some pretty sad human souls out there. You would have to be strong in your faith and virtues not to be sucked into the mindset of the disturbed sector of society you encounter.
God Bless and stay safe.
BTW Whose the the in utero baby one of yours?

May God watch over the family of this officer, and keep them safe. May He provide comfort and strength and healing, in Jesus' name.

A local sheriff's deputy told me the worst cases are domestic violence and serving what should be a simple warrant. In the domestic cases he said that husband and wife often pair up against the deputy to protect one another and in warrants the unexpected often happens, to the point it is now the expected.

Thanks for the support! A normal check for warrants does a nation wide inquiry through NCIC, National Crime Information Center, computers which the FBI is in charge of. All states upload their wanted subject data to NCIC but wouldn't include petty offences. Of course missing persons, stolen cars, stolen property, violent gang member, terrorist info, etc...is all there too. Canada is also part of it. States have their own data bases too where the minor stuff can be entered along with the same data going to NCIC.
Thats my little guy on the ultrasound. Well the wife's too. I epect he'll be making his debut in a few weeks. I know the misses is ready for it 8>)
