An unforgettable experience. I also got to see Ronald Reagan-he came to my highschool, had to be 1975 or so. Little did I know then that he was to be one of the great presidents. The pope just mesmerized me, can't exactly put it into words. It must have been something to be as close to him as you were.

Now, on the War on Terror JPII stated that we should not use our military. That is only a logical conclusion.

May your Mom rest in peace, Txsleuth.
They say Mom is the glue that keeps the family together and when she's gone the family tends to break apart.
Hope all is well with you and your family.

LOL, that thread didn't last long. I think the moderator put it quite well regarding TA:

A Man So Loved... Despite the controversies swirling around the Catholic Church and the Pope; knowledgeable collectors have begun snapping up the 2001 Vatican1,000 Lire coins that feature Pope John Paul II. Recently withdrawn from circulation by the Vatican, the rapidly vanishing coin holds the
unique distinction of being the final Vatican minted Lire coin ever issued with the portrait of the Holy Father. This situation with the Vaticancoinage is quite uncommon. Normally, when a new coin or mint year is introduced, the coinage from previous years remains in circulation for years, even decades. However, with the creation of the Euro in 2002, the Vatican Lire were actually withdrawn from circulation. This created the classic situation
.a dwindling supply of something very desirable and a growing number of people who want one.

Thank you so much. You are very gracious. My son is Baptist, now. I have visited his church with him and always enjoyed the service and the friendliness. Pope John Paul II loves us all - Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslum, Hindu, athiest. He knows no malice, no prejudices, no wrath. He is love personified - pure and shining love. His spirit radiates it. God is holding him in His hands and keeping him close, I just know it.
Thanks to everyone here, of all faiths, who have been kind and loving and used this as an opportunity to express concern and compassion. It was a time for that, and not contraversy.
Although most all of us on the Free Republic enjoy a good argument, there are times when the wise know when to pick their battles. I am grateful to those who understood this. May our Holy and Loving Father John Paul II recover in peace. Amen

Maybe, maybe not. No, there's no "maybe" about it. JP was the driving force behind solidarity. I will never forget when he first met with the Soviet puppet leader of Poland, General Jaruzelski. When the General was reading his opening statement he was shaking with fear so bad he could hardly read what was written.
But the fall of the USSR would still have occurred
You keep interesting intellectual company, that is exactly what the left says about Reagan.

But the fall of the USSR would still have occurred. The Left was saying that when they were remembering Reagan the week Reagan died last year.
I can never understand the left. They continue to be on the wrong side of history, siding with tinhorn dictators, despots, kooks, and wack jobs, while at the same time, angry that Hitler invaded their Communist homeland.

It was the local Chuch and ArchBishop that were instrumental in the revolution. The Pope repeatedly stressed dialogue and not confrontation.
