Mother accused of buying alcohol for teens on school field trip

A parent chaperon is accused of buying alcohol for students on a field trip.

Lenoir City Schools Superintendent Wayne Miller, along with police and the District Attorney are investigating the report.

Miller says the incident allegedly happened Saturday night, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Seventeen students and four chaperones from Lenoir City High's Chamber Choir were sightseeing and performing in the city last weekend. They performed in a Baptist Church Sunday.

Miller is still gathering information, but he says it appears a number of students were with a mother, when she stopped at a convenient store and bought the alcohol. He says just three students, including the woman's daughter, later chose to drink it in her presence.

"If a parent had provided my own daughter with alcohol, I would have a serious issue with that," Miller says.

His daughter is involved in the high school choral program, but she wasn't on the trip.

"I have no idea why, no idea why," he reacts. "It's just an example of extremely poor judgment on several people's parts."

Miller says a detailed, itinerary is designed to keep field trips on task. Typically, he trusts parent chaperones to supervise the time in-between scheduled events.

"We don't protect kids from parents, they are our allies," Miller says. "We've always assumed they have the same goals we do, for their children to be as successful as possible and to abide by the rules of school and civil law."

Normally, students caught drinking at school events would see a 365 day suspension because it's a zero tolerance offense.

This time, the consequences, like the circumstances, will likely be different.

Punishment for the parent isn't clear either.

"We're asking the police department to pursue this with all vigor," Miller says of the mother accused. "We'd like to see if there's charges that are able to be filed, that they are filed."

The mother accused has denied her involvement to the school principal.

The superintendent is meeting with all parents to explain what happened and what happens next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. He says counselors will be available.

Miller is also consulting with an attorney about having chaperones sign statements before field trips.

Would you feel different if the parent was a guy buying alcohol for 17 year-old girls with the possible intent of sleeping with one of them.

What kind of a question is that?

I don't think ANYONE would be comfortable with a (guy) parent doing anything with 17 yo girls with the possible intent of sleeping with one of them.

The subject is buying beer for those who are underage, not trying to have sex with them.

If you're going to comment it really helps to keep the facts straight.

They were not "on the way home". it was Saturday night before they sang at a church on Sunday.

It was not just her daughter but 3 other students as well.

Do you drink on the job? (Oops, I'll bet I know the answer and hence all the emotion)

Is there a point to all of this. Did something I say hit a little too close to home? Can we just let it go. This is a really old story by now anyway.

Hillary, I am so glad to hear you had a wonderful time in highschool and college.

Because I didn't spend it drunk and stoned and entered college at 16?

Roughly one in ten consumers of alcohol will develop alcoholism. May I ask where you got that statistic? I ask because I know many drinkers (in fact just about everybody I know drinks), and yet I know nobody whom I would call alcoholic. Also, that strikes me as a variable statistic, that is one which would be the rate in prevailing circumstances, altered circumstances producing altered rates

Clinical studies that cover multiple demographics, cultures, races, religions, socio-economic etc show roughly 10% in any/all will be alcoholic.

Although you may not perceive any of your associates as being an alcoholic [and maybe they are not ], I must assume that you have no way of knowing for sure, due to the lengths that most practicing alcoholics will go to hide the facts.

Being as though successful treatment is roughly 25%, I would venture to say that most alcoholics [the 75% that fail in treatment ] really dont think they are part of the 10%...

You know, the article does not say it was not on the way home. If that mother bought the alchohol while still in the middle of the activities, then yes she did wrong as she is there, presumably, to stop such things.

All you had to do was explain your position. I still see no reason to believe what you said, other than to take your word for it, no thank you.

But all in all, seeing your constant snippiness with hellowdoghunter, you are sadly in need of some people skills.

Buzz off.

Lets not equate being drunk and being stoned. Marijuana is illegal for everyone, alcohol is legal for those over 21.

While I do not dispute that some underage drinkers will drink because it's cool, you have to aknowledge that most people drink because it's fun.

Yes Hillary. Fun.

Yes, but she gave it to her daughter's friends.

So then, allow the kids to buy it for themselves.

Most kids drink anyway. Making it illegal has only encouraged binge drinking and sneakiness.

Gosh, how can you not understand my clear point? Your gratuitous FR bashing is the point. You engage in it, deny it, then refuse to explain or defend it (not that it would be defensible).

Alcohol is alcohol. pacing yoursef has nothing to do with what drug you do, only in your ability to control its intake. My wife cant stand the smell of beer, so using it as an option wouldnt matter. I can dump a helluva lot of liquid into my system at any given time.

As you said earlier, pot is so much easier to get than alcohol, which is sold most anywhere, that legalization isnt a factor, education and responsibility are the keys here.

BTW, would there be an outrage if the parent bought them all a bottle of listerine ???

Yes, if they then reported she bought it for them and encouraged them to drink it in order to attain a result.

We cannot as a society- send 18 year olds off to college and not expect them to drink. Are we kidding ourselves? Most parents are apathetic to their teenagers drinking anyway.

Liberals are all about "gray areas" but they cannot differentiate between beer and liquor. It was the left wing liberal Democrat's agenda to lower the voting age and raise the drinking age.

I agree with you.

This parent was completely irresponsible. This was completely inappropriate.

You asked a question and I answered it. You are the one who has a compulsion to have the last word. If you don't want an answer, don't ask the question.

Go ahead now, have your last word.

LOL

If the parent did buy listerine for the sake of drinking.

Beer and Liquor both have alcohol, but different amounts.

""I can dump a helluva lot of liquid into my system at any given time.""

Well I can't. And the ratio of alcohol to non alcohol in beer versus liquor, makes all the difference.
