New federal regulations will require diesel engines built after 2007 to meet standards that will eliminate more than 90 percent of pollutants in diesel exhaust.

But second hand smoke, aka environmental tobacco smoke, which causes didlee squat, is outlawed already.

Smoky diesel exhaust billowing from the tailpipes of buses, trucks and construction equipment leads to more premature deaths, heart attacks and bouts of asthma in New York than in any other state, according to a report released yesterday by the Clean Air Task Force, an environmental group.

And just how did they come to this conclusion? There is no way this can be proved, period. So, they make up the stats and most peeples take it as scientific evidence.

More junk science to throw on the heap.

New Yorkers had better be careful when dealing with politically incorrect truckers. They may just stop deliveries to NY in protest. Then how will the latte crowd survive?

I am shocked that New Jersey isn't number 1 on the list. The amount of Diesel burned on I-95 and Route 1, along with the oil refineries, must count for something.

Actually, once we get low-sulfur diesel fuel by September 2006, we can finally use the latest in fuel-delivery technology (common-rail pressurized direct fuel injection) and exhaust emission control technology (catalytic converters that also "burn off" diesel particulates) to dramatically reduce harmful exhausts from diesel engines. They're already doing that in Europe, where low-sulfur diesel fuel has been available for a couple of years.

sure it does, NJ has 7 million people breathing it in filtering it 24/7 so it doesn't show up as much when they measure it.

I once read that it's the "compressed diesel" fumes which are the worst and not engines idling per se.

When they step on the accelerator from a starting position the compressed gasses coming out of the exhaust are much worse and more toxic. Buses come to mind since they are involved in a lot of stop and go driving and trucks in traffic.

A deadly distinction for the Garden State

Data puts Jersey 2nd in U.S. for diesel soot

Sure they can, they have this neat little computer program they call SAMMEC. It's really great - works like this...
you feed in a mathematical equation that will produce the results that you want and voila...

This is exactly how they come up with the "400,000 die every year from 2nd hand smoke. Go to the EPA & look it up...oh, whoops...I forgot that "scientific report" was overturned & is now defunct as fraudulent. Never-mind...
(sarcasm definitely on)

I have an Aunt and Uncle who have lived just west of Route 1 in Linden, behind the refinery tanks. Its amazing my cousin wasn't born with lung cancer.
