Former aide: Relationships more important than history (Wead cancels on Chrissy Matthews)
MSNBC ^ | 2-23-05

Posted on 02/23/2005 5:39:34 PM PST by Indy Pendance

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a note to MSNBC “Hardball” anchor Chris Matthews, Doug Wead says he “has come to realize that personal relationships are more important than history” and that he is asking his attorney to “find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong.”

Wead sent the note to Matthews and “Hardball” producers on Tuesday following the cancellation of his scheduled appearance on the program. Following is the text of the note from Wead to Matthews:

Dear Mr. Matthews,

I am so sorry to cancel your show. It was very gracious of you to allow me a chance to share my heart and regrets about recent events. It seems the better part of wisdom for me to forgo television for a time. It would only add to the distraction I have caused to the president’s important and historic work.

Contrary to a statement that I made to the New York Times, I have come to realize that personal relationships are more important than history. I am asking my attorney to direct any future proceeds from the book to charity and to find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong. History can wait.

Thanks for your consideration,

Doug Wead

Exactly.

Contrary to the more cynical on FR, sometimes people have a change of heart.

I love history. If I was in his case, I admit it would be tempting to tape somebody I thought one day would be powerful.

But, I would not do it. Why? Because, like he says, history can wait. History is not so important as to warrant secret tapings.

History SHOULD wait as well because you need some space between the events/person for a proper analysis and perspective. You can't run roughshod like this guy did.

I think he actually realizes that now, and is genuinely sorry.

Could this be some publicity ploy? Perhaps sending the tapes back is such a ploy, but it is hard for me to see a person be able to fake a request to donate his book proceeds to charity.

I think the guy is genuine.

I'm not sure conscience had anything to do with it, to tell you the truth.

I think someone (his lawyer?) had a nice long talk with him and explained how he screwed up with this stunt

Agreed. It takes a big man to do just what he did.

It's good to know he still has a conscience.

My bet is that he got a phone call, or two.

There was a panel discussion led by Paul Greenberg with mostly former Homeland Security personnel after the movie.

I'd forgotten that most of the Patriot Act provisions expire at the end of this year.

I got the booklet from our sheriff and don't think it came from www.ready.gov but will order one of those too and see what it has to say. We never bought duct tape or extra water or made any provisions for Y2K or after 9/11 and it's probably time to make a few adjustments.

It could have been his lawyer who did it, or his own realization that he had messed up royally, and was actually hurting himself.

Maybe I'm not being fair, and obviously I don't know what's in the man's heart, but he did make the tapes over a period of time, which is SLEAZY, and he did give them to the NYTimes which is SLEAZIER.

NOW he has a conscience? Where has it been the past 6 years??

I don't discount sincere repentance and regret, but let's just say, it will take more than "History can wait." to prove it to me.

I agree with every word you said.

Years and years of betrayal are not wiped away with "I don't want to be on TV because my 'relationships' are too important."

The President will forgive him, and never trust him again.

That's my take on it too. Perhaps the tapes are already in the hands of some "undisclosed source". I'm sick to death of journalistic protection.

Sounds like he didn't like what he saw in the mirror after he stabbed President Bush in the back.

Honestly I think this was done after a lot of agonizing reflection and soul searching. Good for him.

You are too kind. His retractions and sudden contrition is a gigantic

"OOPS, I've made a serious mistake. No one will ever give me an interview for another book. And my sales for the book I am now promoting are going to be terrible, because I have just alienated most of my readers."

Billy Krystol says Wead is a sleazy kinda guy. He met him at the WH during the 41st prez. I am glad he's not going to be on Commie Matthews show...bet the Bush Family made Wead an offer he couldn't refuse. ;o)

well, I agree Wead's sales among conservatives would be, shall we say, nil? But unlike John O'Neill, within a day of his releasing his tapes he was on with Perky Katie and others of the left who just LOVE anything that is adverse to President Bush, so his sales would have been high among those on the left who can read.

I safely projject that he can forget about invitations to the White House or W taking his calls any time soon.

Oh, I wasn't clear in that last post. I did not mean that he would not get TV interviews. I was thinking of his attempts to gather data for future books by conducting interviews with people of historical interest. His career as a history writer just took a serious hit.

The Raising of a President : The Mothers and Fathers of Our Nation's Leaders
by Doug Wead

* Hardcover: 528 pages
* Publisher: Atria (January 4, 2005)
* Amazon.com Sales Rank in Books: #1,054

This is probably an interesting book, and only one page is about GW Bush, apparently. Using his tapes to promote it was stupid as well as sleazy. I know I will never read it, and am sure that lots of others feel the same way.

Hmmm... never thought of that, Rove has Wead release these tapes that make President Bush look good (and Clinton look bad) but releases them in the context of a scandal in order to kill the media-created Gannon scandal. Absolutely freakin' brilliant! I love it!

Rove is the Rave, man!

Chrissy Matthews just said that "every one all over the world is just buzzing about Bush's possible drug use"---

He asserts that the newspapers all over the world think this is really important the Bush MAY have used drugs.

I don't believe him--I think he is saying that because he knows he can't assert that the US is buzzing about it, because we know that they aren't---

Chrissy never knows when to quit, does he?

The left these days are acting like a scene straight out of 1984 ... no matter what happens .. ROVE (Goldstein) did it!

They did the same thing with Scaife in the 90's.
