London 23.02.05 | Shocked by the Carter Center's imprimatur of last August I managed to engage in an e-conversation with Jennifer McCoy vis-à-vis the sheer negligence that characterized their 'electoral observation mission' in Venezuela. As admitted by her, the Carter Center (CC) never had any control over the scrutiny processes that ensued the recall referendum but it did have the nerve to endorse the results of the election. Furthermore, the CC's validation of results was vox populi in international circles, as I was made aware of by BBC journalists prior to Jimmy Carter / Cesar Gaviria press conference in Caracas on Monday August 16.

Yes indeed, the Venezuelan recall election disaster is another in a long list of foreign policy disasters produced by the arrogant and self-righteous Jimmy Carter. At the exact point in time when Venezuela needed people in the U.S. to stand up and declare that this election was rigged, the Carter Center had the audacity and stupidity to endorse these election results. One can only hope that when Chavez's current term ends, some kind of reasonably fair election can occur to choose his successor. At this point, I'd say the odds of that happening are less than 50% because of the idiocy and irresponsbility of the Carter Center.
The Vens have had their last free election. Chavez is it, period.
Well let's hope not. We were able to get rid of Daniel Ortega and move El Salvador back onto the path to freedom back in the 80's. The Vens have one big thing working in their favor: they are indomitable freedom-loving people with a history of democracy. Now they need a spark, a catalyst to push them back onto the right track.
They need guns. Chavez has them rounded up.
I concur with you. Forget about free elections; it isn't going to happen. Bear in mind that four of the five directors in charge of the electoral body are openly in favour of Chavez. They were elected illegaly by the also subservient new justices of the Supreme Court.
Chavez it is, until he dies or decides to pass the torch. In light of his mentor's precedent what's the likeliness of that event happening?
