On an otherwise slow news day, why not take advantage of the lull to have an economic expert analogize the United States to a prostitute?
That was apparently Katie Couric's working hypothesis this morning. You knew there wasn't much shakin' in the world when the opening segment dealt with the Queen's decision to skip Prince Charles' and Camilla's civil ceremony. Whatev-uh.
Then it was on to a discussion of the stock market's sizeable drop yesterday - 174 points on the Dow. As a general rule, nothing makes less sense that trying to discern a trend from one day's market action, but that doesn't deter Today, which regularly trots out Ron Insana of CNBC in such situations.
Normally in these segments, Insana, perhaps embarrassed by the meaninglessness of reading one day's tea leaves, says nothing of particular interest, keeping it neutral.
But for some reason he chose, with (as you will see) malice aforethought, to analogize the USA to a . . . woman of the night.
He said that the triggering event for yesterday's slide was the reported decision by South Korea to stop buying US dollars. S. Korea is apparently the fourth largest government purchaser of our currency. This caused the dollar to slide, setting off a negative chain of events.
In any case, at this point, Insana stated to Katie that, in relying on foreign purchases of our currency, "the United States is living off the kindness of strangers." That, of course, is Blanche Dubois' famous line from A Streetcar Named Desire, in which she delicately admits that, yes, she is a prostitute.
Insana admitted that this was no mere impromptu remark. To the contrary, he stated that he had cleared his statement with the Today Show producers. So there was undisputed connivance among the people at NBC and CNBC to cast the country in this light.
One is tempted to say: let those who are not media street walkers cast the first stone!
Today Show lady-of-the-night ping.
All I can say is that it takes one to know one.
All I can say is, I'm so glad I don't watch that perky little show. Thank you for your sacrifice sir.
Yet another reason not to watch that yammering bimbo.
So the "perky one" is interviewing herself?????
Now, that is an original thought.
HA!! HA!! HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa!!
"All I can say is, I'm so glad I don't watch that perky little show. Thank you for your sacrifice sir."
I second that.
On-air "talent" has been compared to the oldest profession many more times.
Katie just can't stop herself, can she? Your report has me laughing this morning.
If we can't laugh at the MSM calling our country a wh---, the terrorists will have won ;-)
I think that's a huge stretch. "The kindness of strangers" is an often-used phrase.
The biased old lame/commie/socialist/democrat/media has been "living off the kindness of strangers" and uninformed citizens for decades. It's laughable.
That is Capitalism that a profession can fall under. (Pun intended)
"The kindness of strangers" might be often-used, but "living off the kindness with strangers" is not. It is a direct quote from A Streetcar Named Desire, and indisputably constituted Blanche's admission that she was a prostitute.
That Insana knew exactly what he was implying is proved by the fact that he admitted that he felt it necessary to clear his statement in advance with the Today Show producers. In other words, he knew it was controversial to say it, but he, and Katie's producers, decided to go ahead.
Katie and all the alphabet network heads are media whores. Will someone please say that on morning televison?
Did Ron give any investment advice or mention what he plans to do?
I think he recommended that people cash out all their assets and invest the proceeds in pork belly futures ;-) But seriously, I can't really remember what he said along those lines: he tends to be very cautious about recommending any particular line of action. He did add that gasoline prices are likely to remain high for months.
Expert, break it down into syllables.
Ex = has been
Spurt = drip under pressure
And how much does Katie make a year?
Could part of the reason be because spring is coming up??
