FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - An ex-boyfriend was arrested and charged with murder in the disappearance of a pregnant woman and her 7-year-old son, officials said Tuesday.
A police official initially said the bodies of bagel shop owner Lisa Underwood and her son, Jayden, who had been missing since Saturday, were found Tuesday. But he later backtracked and said only one body was found.
Stephen Dale Barbee, 37, of Fort Worth, was arrested Monday night in Tyler, and Fort Worth police were bringing him back to Tarrant County, police said.
Police Lt. Gene Jones said he and Underwood had had a romantic relationship, but he didn't know why Barbee was in Tyler, how investigators knew to find him there or whether there were other suspects.
Underwood's SUV was found in a creek near the town of Denton on Monday. On Tuesday, investigators were searching an area about 10 miles from that site, Jones said. He had said both bodies were found, but later said there was evidence of only one body in the wooded area in rural Denton County.
He declined to say which body was found or whether Barbee led them to the site.
Underwood, seven months pregnant, and her son were reported missing Saturday after she failed to show up at her baby shower. A pool of blood was found in her Fort Worth home, but there was no sign of forced entry, police said.
Acting on an anonymous tip, police had searched a Fort Worth home during the night and found an item referred to by the tipster, but officials would not say how it figured in their investigation.
Police did not immediately establish a motive for the killing, Jones said.
"We know that at one time Mr. Barbee and Ms. Underwood were romantically involved. We don't know what the latest status of that relationship was," he said.
Jones said he didn't know who was the father of Underwood's fetus, but a neighbor of Underwood, Debbie Lindley, said it was Barbee. Underwood and Barbee met about two years ago but split up last fall because Barbee had another girlfriend, Lindley said. She didn't know of any violent incidents between the couple.
That guy will get the needle. The clock is tickin'.
I don't live very far away at all, not too close though..
I think they'll probably need a change of venue. I'm sure any jury in DFW would vote fry him in a few minutes. If they move the trial to Corpus Christi, I volunteer to be on the jury.
very sad news...
its getting that we have so many of these horrendous crimes and so much instant media, that one can take an educated guess on "who dunnit" and ususally come out right.....
I think the perp has got to have some history of some kind......
The boyfriend has already confessed to it and explained the degenerate reasoning behind it.
Give it a week and some aspiring attorney will explain the mental dysfunction involved as to prevent an appropriate penalty.

I think ANY jury in Texas will be sending this loser to Death Row.
Even when Darlie Routier's trial was moved to the retirement community of Kerrville, Texas, they gave her the DP, and rightfully so.
A police official initially said the bodies of bagel shop owner Lisa Underwood and her son, Jayden, who had been missing since Saturday, were found Tuesday. But he later backtracked and said only one body was found. What the heck!? Yesterday they reported finding BOTH bodies. Bad reporting or did they lose a body? (Sounds to me like stupid reporters blaming the police, maybe! How in the world can they blow that? One body vs 2 being found?).
Police did not immediately establish a motive for the killing, Jones said.
On 820 AM WBAP radio this morning, they said something about the pregnant victim was trying to blackmail him, but I didn't catch any detail on what that was all about.
Dale Barbee needs to be Barbee-cued...
