Virginia man charged in alleged plot to assassinate Bush By MATTHEW BARAKAT

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A former high school valedictorian in Virginia was charged Tuesday with conspiring to assassinate President Bush and conspiracy to support the al-Qaida terrorist network.
Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, 23, a U.S. citizen, made an initial appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court. He claimed that he was tortured while detained in Saudi Arabia since June of 2003 and offered through his lawyer to show the judge his scars.
The indictment said that in 2002 and 2003 Abu Ali and an unidentified coconspirator discussed plans for Abu Ali to assassinate Bush. They discussed two scenarios, the indictment said, one in which Abu Ali "would get close enough to the president to shoot him on the street" and, alternatively, "an operation in which Abu Ali would detonate a car bomb."
A small minority of racist extremists gives a bad name to all conservatives and we face a huge political challenge in the future as a result of this. Surely you realize demographic realities and the implications of them for conservatism.

I just saw a picture of him on MSNBC. I don't know when it was takent but he had a mustache, beard (though trimmed so they were separate features) and he had a smile on his face in this photo.

I am completely opposed to the proposition evidently being offered on this thread that the media omit the FACT that this man was born in the U.S. (Texas) and did in fact live in Virginia.
It is completely appropriate that that information be given. It is very clear from his name and trip after 9/11 to join al Qaeda what he was up to.
They are the only people that currently have religous and political leaders encouraging violence against others. Oswald and Ray were lone nut cases - they were not egged on by their government.
How many countries outside of the middle east have fund raisers for people who strap bombs on themselves and blow up other peoples kids? How many religions teach their followers that members of other religions need to be killed and that the killer will be rewarded?
Thank the LORD that His Spirit is drawing us to pray for our president here on FR and everytime he comes to mind. It's warfare on a level we cannot see. Ali is just one of the earthly faces of the evil one.

The best part is that the Saudis tortured the crap out of him and he gave up a bunch of his fellow muzzie terrorists. He holds dual U.S./Jordanian citizenship so he had to be tried here, but his foreigner buddies are now hanging out in shackles with Khalid Sheik Mohommed in never-never land.
Terrorism exists around the world--including here from extremist groups. There are some "Christian Identity" type groups here that encourage violence, for instance.
I do agree that terrorism and violence is more prevalent against Muslims than other groups, though.

Regardless of what you think about Muslims are Islam, the fact is that only a small fraction--a few thousand--of 1.2 billion Muslims are terrorists.
I support giving extra scrutiny to people with olive skin and dark hair at airports but racial profiling alone will not get the job done, especially since there are white and black terrorists and white-looking Arabs.
Yeah, another lousy foreigner taking another american job. There are plenty of out of work democrats who would be more than willing to shoot Bush.

The majority of muslims around the world (except in Iraq and Afghanistan) support Osama bin Laden. Why? Because he's a terrorist.
