Riverside, N.J., Feb. 21, 2005 — Sources say the 14-year-old boy having an affair with a teacher is cooperating with police, but is reluctant to divulge details for fear of getting her in more trouble. Action News has been told the boy is in love with the teacher, who is ten years older, and that the two even talked of marriage.

Gail Nottie/STORE OWNER: "I can't understand it, I can't see what a women would see in a child."

People are still in shock about the arrest Friday of a substitute teacher at Riverside High School for allegedly having an affair with a fourteen-year-old student.

Twenty-four-year-old Angela Stellwag, the daughter of Delran Mayor Joseph Stellwag, has been charged with sexual assault. Police say the two met in 2003 at Beverly City school when he was an eighth grader, and Stellwag was a substitute. Students there say there was lots of talk.

Mychalynn Bryant/STUDENT: "He would always stay after school with her and like people just started getting suspicious."

Gabrielle Hensley/Student: "One time I was at Sub Shack and I seen them up there, and they were making out in the car, and 'Wow'."

Efforts to contact Stellwag and her attorney were unsuccessful authorities have seized e-mails and love notes between the teacher and teen as evidence.

Attorney Mike Riley represent the boy and his family and says the fourteen-year-old is having a difficult time.

Mike Riley/VICTIM'S ATTORNEY: "The young man is not in a position where he has the legal capacity to give legal consent.... The shock of this relationship being exposed, the intense news interest in the relationship, the fact that he obviously has feelings for this young lady. It's a very distressing and disturbing situation he finds himself in."

At the deli down the street from Riverside High, people are shaking their heads.

Sal Notte/STORE OWNER: "Now whether she's guilty or not, I don't want to judge anybody, but it's just a horrible thing that happened."

Am I the only one getting why this wrong, or has the world become this desensitized to children being preyed upon by adults?

No, you're not the only one. I've started to post several times, but changed my mind. Those who have made light of the teacher's culpability don't seem to understand or care about the harm done to the boy.

Teachers all over the country are running amok, molesting children, etc.
Goes to show what happens when you mix LSD and quaaludes with a liberal arts education.
All kids should be required to carry pepper spray to school to fend off horny teachers.

Hard for me to imagine that some of these people are parents who would be genuinely please at the thought of their 14 year old son walking down the aisle with a 25 year old teacher who will saddle their child with such a heavy load at such a young age, and then push on to the next 14 year old boy leaving their son responsible for supporting a child and emotionally messed up. Pretty funny, huh?

I wasn't comparing the acts, I was noting the willingness of some people to broadbrush the entire Catholic priesthood as a bunch of perverts in spite of the fact that we did not have all that many instances of"perverted acts" compared to the number of catholic priests. And yet, when we've had a good number of teachers bed down with students, no one is suggesting there's something amiss in the public school system. That would be....sacreligous.
Is there something amiss in the public school system that's causing this sudden outbreak? Or is the media simply getting into reporting these scandals? Regardless, the media have enough instances of sexual abuse that, given the standards demonstrated during the catholic priest sex abuse scandals, is enough to at least suggest that the entire public school system is tainted and in need of an investigation.

I'm pointing out a basic case of "selective outrage." Or don't you get that?

It might be wise for you not to personally attack people on the forum for statements you don't understand or appreciate. especially when you're only 6 months into your FR career.

Of course it is wrong. Either I am mixed up in this thread or your are. Most likely me. I sure did not mean to leave the impression I thought this was ok.

And, there are far too many of these incidents being reported now for this just to be some random acts.

There is definitely a very serious problem with teachers. Not all, of course. But if this many incidents have occurred, then you can bet there are more.

I expect in the coming year this will be as big a scandal as the one with the catholic priests. Watch for Letterman and Leno to start making jokes about teachers soon.

Financial penalties?? That's hardly a deterrent...

You are right. Anyone doing this has to know it is wrong, very wrong and that there are pretty serious consequences. For those caught, jail time. Long jail time.

But, the more serious problem are all the kids that continue to be at risk in the schools now. Jail is not going to protect them. Steps must be taken to protect the children. It is obvious there is a problem with predatory teachers and it has to be dealt with before more children fall victim.

I understand what you're saying on one level(pefectly natural for women to be attracted to men)---but do you really think it's natural for an ADULT Female to have sex with a 14 yr. old boy??

It's loony.

I mean--I don't wanna get too explicit here---but when I was 14 yrs old if I was having sex with Ms. Whatshername---the average length of our encounters would probably be a little over 1 minute--if you get my drift.

It would be natural for her to want to have that kind of relationship?? Somehow I don't think so...
