N.J. Teacher Charged with Sexaul Assault (Here we go again)

Riverside, N.J., Feb. 21, 2005 — Sources say the 14-year-old boy having an affair with a teacher is cooperating with police, but is reluctant to divulge details for fear of getting her in more trouble. Action News has been told the boy is in love with the teacher, who is ten years older, and that the two even talked of marriage.

Gail Nottie/STORE OWNER: "I can't understand it, I can't see what a women would see in a child."

People are still in shock about the arrest Friday of a substitute teacher at Riverside High School for allegedly having an affair with a fourteen-year-old student.

Twenty-four-year-old Angela Stellwag, the daughter of Delran Mayor Joseph Stellwag, has been charged with sexual assault. Police say the two met in 2003 at Beverly City school when he was an eighth grader, and Stellwag was a substitute. Students there say there was lots of talk.

Mychalynn Bryant/STUDENT: "He would always stay after school with her and like people just started getting suspicious."

Gabrielle Hensley/Student: "One time I was at Sub Shack and I seen them up there, and they were making out in the car, and 'Wow'."

Efforts to contact Stellwag and her attorney were unsuccessful authorities have seized e-mails and love notes between the teacher and teen as evidence.

Attorney Mike Riley represent the boy and his family and says the fourteen-year-old is having a difficult time.

The shock of this relationship being exposed, the intense news interest in the relationship, the fact that he obviously has feelings for this young lady. It's a very distressing and disturbing situation he finds himself in."

At the deli down the street from Riverside High, people are shaking their heads.

Sal Notte/STORE OWNER: "Now whether she's guilty or not, I don't want to judge anybody, but it's just a horrible thing that happened."

I have not equated the two, but there is a parallel. Both teachers and priests are entrusted to look out for our children. they are both entrusted to teach our children. they are both entrusted to look out for the welfare of our children.

We have a similar trend of improper sexual conduct between people who are supposed to be looking out for our children in both the Catholic priesthoood and the public school system. You're trying to say it's different because of the kind of sex the respective groups were involved in, I'm saying it's a similar violation regardless of the particular sex act because both sets of instances involve a violation of trust. Sex is sex is sex. It matters little whether you find one sex act more perverted than another; what matters in this discussion is that adults entrusted wiith peoples' children had sex with their children. It sounds to me like it would be okay with you if a priest had sex with a 12 year old girl because they'd be having heterosexual sex..

the few times that sex abuse cases came up regardng the Catholic church was enough for the media to begin decrying the church as a whole, and thereby begin a long period of fomenting dissent in the ranks. I don't see such an outcry in this instance and there should be: the Public schools have been gettiing away with their own brand of corruption for too long. Now they've got teachers sleeping with students. Where's the outrage?

He's 14 now, in early 2005; BUT she met him in 2003, and students were suspicious of them then.

Definitely a NABWLA (hypothetical NAMBLA's sister org) hall of famer.

A male teacher, at my high school, who was 26 messed around with a 16 year old student, consentually... it was well known that she DID approach him, one of those grades for sex things.

He not only lost his job as a teacher, he was stripped of his commission as an Officer, and discharged from the National Guard for it.

But that was back in 1980.

-- what else am I to infer from this sentence other than the type of sex is what has you concerned? Andso what if "you said" it's illegal.it's illegal for an adult to have sex with a minor, and especially egregious an offense when this occurs in a situation in which the adult is supposed to be lookking out ffor the child's welfare. It's all illegal.: teacher/underage student, priest/underage boy, underage girl etc. etc..



Perhaps I should have phrased things differently (it's late) : (referring to your second paragraph, here) It only took a relatively few cases of perverted priests for the media to have an uproar. subsequently , after much investigation, other cases startedd to emerge. I did not mean to imply that these priests were not guilty. But, If the media were as outraged by this student/teacher problem (as I believe they should be, but understand why they aren't) , we'd see alot of cases come out of the woodwork. And I suspect they'd be as --if not more -- numerous as the pedophilic priest debacles.

Actually this case is no different than if it were a male teacher with a female student because both cases would involve an adult committing a crime against a child. If they find this female teacher guilty of this crime, I hope she is sentenced to at least 10 years in prison.

I know a guy who worked in corrections at state and federal levels for years. Back when the Deborah LaFave incident made the news, I talked to him about the ramifications of a young adult female doing prison time for statutory rape of a male student.

Just as I suspected, in the womens' correctional centers, there is no major stigma related to such a crime. Where a man incarcerated for such crimes against an underage female will be lucky to survive to see the outside world, for a woman it is viewed as no big deal, and in some cases women so convicted enjoy a bit of "celebrity". So much for the deterrance factor.
