I know a guy who worked in corrections at state and federal levels for years. Back when the Deborah LaFave incident made the news, I talked to him about the ramifications of a young adult female doing prison time for statutory rape of a male student.
Just as I suspected, in the womens' correctional centers, there is no major stigma related to such a crime. Where a man incarcerated for such crimes against an underage female will be lucky to survive to see the outside world, for a woman it is viewed as no big deal, and in some cases women so convicted enjoy a bit of "celebrity". So much for the deterrance factor.
