Wead: Unreleased Tapes a 'Betrayal'

Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 1:33 p.m. EST Wead: Unreleased Tapes a 'Betrayal'

Audiotapes released Sunday of President Bush speaking in a private, off-the-record conversation may not be as damaging as critics had hoped, with Bush winning raves in some cases for sounding the same in unguarded moments as he does in public.

But presidential historian and former first family friend Doug Wead, who secretly recorded Bush, is hinting that the full nine hours of audio he has could be a different matter.

Asked whether the president would view his release of the audio as an act of treachery from a trusted friend, Wead told the Washington Post on Monday, "It depends on what else is on the tapes." Then Wead implied that the unreleased material could be embarrassing, explaining, "Ninety percent of the tapes have not been heard. He can see that my motive was not to try to hurt him."

How could Bush see that, unless Wead was holding back damaging clips?

"If I released all the tapes, it would be an act of betrayal," the author told the Post, further indicating he has some explosive material.

But in the next breath Wead promised: "Most of them have never seen the light of day and never will."

That's not, however, what he told the New York Times for its front page story on Sunday, explaining that he wanted to release them when he died in order to leave the nation a unique record of Mr. Bush.

Other aspects of Wead's story are also raising concerns. He told the Times, for instance, that his motive in releasing some of his tapes had nothing to do with the fact that he has a new book to publicize.

However, the Post reports that Wead's publisher was deeply involved in making the tapes public.

"He said that he had never intended the tapes to become public, but that his publisher, Simon & Schuster, asked to hear them for libel reasons," reports the Post.

The Post continued, "He said after he played them for his editors, he was contacted by the Times and agreed to play portions for a reporter."

Why was the Times alerted? And why did Wead agree to help the paper if he never intended to make the tapes public?

At this point, there's only one logical answer: Mr. Wead's earlier plan to hide his tapes forever changed radically once his publisher began to see dollar signs.

"...the tapes, would be more valuable when the person he betrayed is a SITTING PRESIDENT--- "

Just a thought but was not Bush a sitting president n the last election cycle?

I remember that list...but I had forgotten about it (incredibly enough).

I'm going to file it away now for future reference. Thanks for reminding us.

The guy is like Judas. He is angry that Bush isn't as far right as he should be so he thinks by hurting Bush he is helping the far right cause. It won't come out like he thinks it will but at least he will have his 30 pieces of silver.

Ok, just 37 or 126 more allegations against President Bush and I may not vote for him in 2008.

if the Prez didn't know he was being taped, that's a felony in most jurisdictions, and I believe federally.

Nope - not in Texas - only one person needs to know -

which obviously would be he tape-er

"How much time did Linda Tripp do?"

If I remember correctly, Linda Tripp did quite a bit of
time...being mercilessly ridiculed in the press and media (John Goodman on SNL for example) for her appearance and
her betrayal of a friend.

Shouldn't the SS be interrogating this jerk-weed (Wead) for threatening the President of the United States?

Yeah, you caught that, huh?

I didn't really express it well, but I was trying to say that if Kerry had won the election, the tapes wouldn't be as "contoversial" or "valuable" as they are now---

Perhaps I am still not making sense---but you have to admit the whole sordid thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless he did decide to sell his soul for a few sheckels--

I mean this guy wasn't starving and NEEDED Bush's tapes to make his book, and therefore his career to succeed!!!

What do you want to bet that Chrissy and Keith Olbermann both feature this on their shows with the exact same emphasis and suspicion of the "other tapes"--and what might be in them?

Strictly speaking, I don't think this guy was a spiritual advisor, so much as a strategic advisor.

Bush tursts too many people for his own good. HE should be more careful, it could get really serious one day.

Doubtful the remaining material is harmful to the President. This is a genuine man in private and public.

Judas just wants, as others have rightly already deduced, a bigger cash payout. He's dangling a carrot to the MSM that if they hand him more money, they'll get what they are looking for. Material to asassinate Bush with.

I'd love to have just 10 "private" minutes alone with him. I have to content myself with knowledge he's ruined and this "Christian" will have to explain his "noble" actions to Jesus Christ. I wonder if he'll still defend his silver at that time.

Preparing to raise his price from 30 pieces of silver.

Wead's behavior is despicable and he should be held in contempt by the American people.

Constrast the media treatment of him with that Linda Tripp received (and she taped to protect herself from perjury, obstruction of justice, and who knows what else at the hands of the Clinton mob ).

Michael Savage--the radio talk show host that is kinda wacko in my opinion, but I know a lot of freepers listen to him, is on his show saying that he thinks that Bush and this guy Wead got together and made the tapes recently---

That Bush is in on it and wanted the tapes revealed in order to "shore up his image" -- or somesuch nonsense---

Okay, class, dicuss----

Three guesses on who is behind this whole story? The first two guesses don't count.

The spirit that Doug Wead serves is behind this whole story and it is not holy.

$$$$

Allowing 3-4 companies to control all media is very dangerous. Look at the rewrite of history going on with Bill Clinton. Is it any wonder that we are reliving Nazism right now right down to the smoking police ?

Great list.

Is the #15 on that list the National Archives that is being referenced? If yes, how interesting in light of the Sandy Berger scandal.

Have Savage and Stern ever been in the same room together? They are so similiar.

The only good thing I have to say about Savage is that he initially supported the Swiftees at the start.

To voice that inane conspiracy theory, he proves himself well situated in San Francisco. I've no use for him. If he cannot tolerate the idea that Bush is a genuine guy shoulders above him, let him live in his paranoia.
