While HST was a drug-soaked, ranting liberal, he was also a genius (in his own crazy way)--an incredibly original, fearless, and prolific writer. Unfortunately, his "fear and loathing" finally got the best of him. Very sad--he will be missed.

Agreed--great book, great movie. Hell's Angel's too.
Everything after the mid-70's was unreadable.

What a surprise. That it took him so long.

Does this surprise anyone? It was always clear to me that he was mentally ill and going by the way of suicide was always high on the likelihood meter.

Sad news ping.

I like some of his writings. I did not like some of his early behaviors nor any of his politics which struck me as very shallow.
He was also a prima donna on the college speaking circuit but some of his writing was very entertaining. I agree RPI Mr. Thompson.

Loved the book, didn't like the movie.
I thought Bill Murray (another eccentric genius) was a much better Hunter in Where the Buffalo Roam.
My favourite book was The Great White Shark Hunt. That had his piece about the Kentucky Derby. Hilarious stuff.
