The people that should get his humor are exactly the ones that don't.

You know the types, the ones that lament that all comedy died with Red Skeleton and Hee Haw.

Thompson was brilliant, sadly he inspired countless hack wannabe amatuer drug abusing losers that infiltrate the web with their garbage.

He was an American, before he was a liberal.

Late Wordsworth was boring. Twain at his best? Are you kidding? Huck Finn is boring? Joyce is an acquired taste.

To be fair, there is nothing worse than being a legend in your own lifetime.

I loved the book '' Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'' when I was a kid, it kinda reminded me of Jack Keroaks book '' On The Road'' except it was laced with heavy doses of acid!

This is very sad. Sure, he was very funny. But it is what happens when you spend most of your life whacked out on drugs and alcohol and basically make a joke of it. He might have been funny, but he wasn't happy ... I do hope its one of his classic whacked-out pranks.

Oops.

Yes, I knew I was conflating two completely unrelated, eerie creatures.

Thanks for the correction.

Lovecraft is one of my favorite writers, so far as the horror genre is concerned.

suicide is such a tragic end

Nonsense. Sometimes it's the only way out. Some people have run their course and are ready to go.

The tragedies are the teens that have no perspective of hindsight and feel that life will never change for the better.

I cried when I saw it just now. I remember reading in a biography on HST that when he heard that Hemingway had died he broke down in tears, well Hunter was my Hemingway, and i just gave him the best complement possible, I cried for him. America has lost an icon, political views aside. And for all of you who think it had something to do with John Kerry losing, please read Fear and Loathing on the campaign Trail '72, he hated Nixon with a true hatred, but he lived for 30 more years after that.

BTW, for everyone on here, his son Juan was named for where he was born, San Juan Puerto Rico.

You don't like Walt Whitman?(!)

He was-and remains to this day-our nation's preeminent poet laureate.
