Sandra Dee, Hunter Thompson and John Raitt all in one day. Boy, that's a strange mix. I'll miss Sandra the most.

I'm shocked at this. Rumor had it he was in line to succeed Dan Rather as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

LOL. That's enough to make anyone commit suicide.

When is this supposed to have happened? If it was today, maybe he couldn't live in a world without Sandra Dee?

I don't remember him ever mentioning her in anything of his I've read, but it's the kind of thing he would obsess on.

He wrote some entertaining stuff in the 1970s. I remember one excellent piece about Mohammed Ali and the Kentucky Derby is a classic. Even the bad stuff was interesting because one kept reading it to see if it would get better.

This seller on eBay appears to have predicted the author's demise...

"This copy is in 'as new' F/F condition, in mylar, and soon the value will be at least twice what I'm selling it for. Signed copies will become extremely rare and unattainable in the near future - don't miss out on this collector's beauty! more info (auction ended with no bids on Feb. 19 21:23 PST -- last night)

Read Sonny Bargar's autobiography about the Hell's Angels. It talks about how Thompson was a total pus-y and the Hell's Angels kicked his ass.

Sad, but if it was a suicide I do believe all the drugs acid, and whatever else he took in mass quantities probably had something to do with his deppression. They're finding out more and more, that a lot of these drugs even though they may have been taken a long time ago, considerably change and disturbs the brain chemistry for years to come. May he rest in peace!

One less nutcase voter. To understand he was within his means to move anywhere that suited him, where mass murder would be yet a mere annoyance, like say, SPAIN, he stayed in America. What a hipocrit. Typical Democrat, loyal to the party line to the end. Not human.

I am conservative too, and yet HST is one of my favorite writers. Go figure. I think it was his unique ability to magnify the absurd in any situation. He had a hell of a sense of humor too. RIP HST.

I always thought it a little odd that the person who turned me on to this book in college was the absolutely most conservative guy I knew on campus.

Well, maybe. But we conservatives do read a lot ... although liberals would claim otherwise.
