Job data should give pause to immigration advocates
Star Tribune ^ | February 20, 2005 | Steven A. Camarota

The recovery from the recession of 2001 is often described as "jobless." But this is not entirely correct. My analysis of Census Bureau data shows that between March 2000 and 2004, the number of adults working in United States actually increased.

What's interesting, however, is that all the net growth in jobs went to immigrant workers. In fact, while the number of unemployed adult native-born workers increased by 2.3 million over this time, the number of employed immigrants rose by 2.3 million.

Significantly, about half the growth in immigrant employment was from illegal immigration. --------------- Our analysis also shows little evidence that immigrants only take jobs Americans don't want. It is true that immigration has its biggest impact at the bottom end of the labor market in relatively low-paying occupations done by less-educated workers.

Nonetheless such occupations still employ tens of millions of native-born workers

I always assumed that the workers became legal and got valid SSNs and the SSA was able to purge the phony (unmatched to master files) SSNs.

That's very interesting. I have never been clear on how the government is able to accept money on what are clearly phony SS accounts. Although I suppose the government will take money that comes to it from any source, no questions asked.

It made the news and was posted on FR when it happened. IIRC, there was an eyewitness who appeared to be unimpeachable who verified the suicide aspect. A whole lot of us had gut feelings that it was otherwise, but the investigation ruled suicide.

And whatever happened to checking immigrants for disease...you know, public safety and all that?

Please! That was the rationale for giving free hospital services to illegals - otherwise they might spread communicable diseases, etc. No matter what you come up with, the government can turn it into something weird. However, I think many states and counties are beginning to take a second look at this type of thing (Prop 200, for example), because it's hitting them so hard in the pocketbook.

I say treat them - and charge Mexico. And if (when) Mexico doesn't pay, deduct it from some of the trade or benefits Mexico gets and give the money to the state or county. Or make Mexico set up some kind of health-care fund in this country for dealing with its nationals.

What isn't mentioned here is that they have taken many good paying jobs and turned them into minimum wage pay. Happened right here in construction, where a lot of jobs used to pay very well, but now pay peanuts. And the price of housing has soared.

I assumed that you lived in California because the situation you describe is exactly what is happening here, to the dismay of construction workers, tile workers, gardeners, haulers, nannies, warehouse workers, hospital workers, fast food workers, etc. etc. etc. Illegal aliens are bringing down wages in every corner of the American blue collar landscape, and it seems to be OK with the elites in Washington.

I was thinking more in terms of using it to deny them entrance. In other words, if they're not healthy, we don't want them. Didn't that used to be the case? And I think that even guest workers should have to have a sponsor who is willing to be responsible for them during the time they are here. That would put a little much needed heat on those who employ them.

I should have said in Florida, but you must be right, since I don't see how the dynamic can be any different in any other State.

I'm frustrated with the endless BS that they are taking/doing jobs that no one else wants to do.

It's the dishonesty of the debate that really ticks me off.
I mean, just who do they think they are talking to anyway?
I used to own a roofing company right here on the Treasure Coast, and I know exactly what happens.

Reducing everyone to the lowest common denominator isn't good for America...

I really think the Mexican government should have to come up with a fund of some sort. I also don't see why employers of guest workers or whatever they are finally called shouldn't contribute to a fund that would cover emergency care. That way, even if the employer was a small employer that couldn't qualify for an employee health plan, the costs wouldn't be borne by the state or county, as they are now. However, it would not be so expensive that it would drive the employer out of business.

Of course, exactly how we'd go about doing that legally, I don't know. But then I haven't seen any details on how any of this is going to be done.

To be fair to the SSA they do not like to just purge the ESF. What likely happened is the W-2 data were transferred to the valid SSNs then purged.

The ESF is so large now that there have been Congressional hearings on the matter and SSA has hired beltway bandits to help them solve the problem.

Some question my interpretation of what's in the ESF but I remain convinced that here indeed are the employers who hire (knowingly or unknowingly) ILLEGAL immigrants by the millions.

We don't need shiny new laws to invite them to come forth. Efforts to date such as employer "no match" letters have been met with a storm of protests from the immigrant "rights" industry and sundry vested interests. If government has no will to enforce laws a shiny new law will just be a joke.

The "guest worker" plan will in effect legalize the current situation after adding a few bells and whistles and most importantly give the government something to wave in the faces of anti-ILLEGAL immigrant folks (citizens) and tell them to shut up and sit down. IMO.

When businesses say, "Immigrants only take jobs Americans don't want," what they really mean is that given what they would like to pay, and how they would like to treat their workers, they cannot find enough Americans

What we are talking about is entry level positions. You are not going to make a comfortable living in an entry level job. Most people start at the bottom and work their way up, if you have a little education you can start a little higher. We all had to do it that way. Here in California we have high school dropouts working as handymen living in half million dollar homes, that's why the whole world is invading us. Instead of crying about it these whiners should jump right in, this is the most fantastic time to live in the most fantastic country in the history of the world.

Do a google on Derouchey and Suicide, I think it was the fourth or fifth hit.

Did you see that DeRouchey was an American Indian? Cheyenne, I believe. That's why the hits were Indian/Native American publications.

Thanks. I've always wondered how they got away with that. I have heard, btw, that most employers know they're hiring illegals, but these phoney papers give them enough cover not to get arrested. Actually, it's pretty obvious that the government knows it, too. I vaguely recall some effort to send out letters and, yes, you're right, there was hysteria from the usual suspects.

Personally, I'm in favor of the guest worker program, because it will (in theory) provide a means of getting definitive identification of the participants and also (in theory) make it possible to locate them and make sure they come and go in the appropriate way and on time. However, any program is only as good as its enforcement, and it remains to be seen if there is any serious intention to enforce the regulations. One of the problems we have in discussing this is that very little in the way of a concrete proposal has actually been offered, so we don't actually know what the proposals are relating to enforcement (or even the rules to be enforced).

It's also a little known fact that chinese, asians, and middle easterners are taking doctor and engineer positions away from americans and driving those wages down too.

My view is about 180 degrees from yours...

How many 'new' businesses have cropped up do to the vast supply of illegal labor???

There is no shortage of labor...If anything, there are too many jobs...
Supply and demand used to be the law of the land...If employers had to compete for labor, the wages went up...With the millions of illegals coupled with this new amnesty program and the open border Bush is pushing for, there will always be a shortage of work...And Mexican type wages...And impossible to fund welfare rolls...

Most people start at the bottom and work their way up, if you have a little education you can start a little higher. We all had to do it that way.

That's the way it USED to be...

Now we have men with families working for just above minimum wage...There are few jobs for college and high school kids...Family supporters now have these jobs...

These 'entry level' jobs have been replaced by the British owned Manpower Company...Temporary labor...Temporary jobs...No health, retirement or unemployment benefits...Things ain't the same as when you or I came up thru the ranks...

That's a good point.
