Condit's Reputation on Trial
Modesto Bee ^ | 2-205 | Michael Doyle

Former congressman scrutinized in his libel suit against author Dunne.

Then-congressman Gary Condit's reputation was on the line in late 2001 when his re-election campaign commissioned a survey. Now his reputation is again on the line, though he no longer holds office. As he pursues a defamation lawsuit against author Dominick Dunne, the $11 million question is when did Condit's stature sour. Condit claims Dunne's comments cost him dearly, up to and including the March 2002 Democratic primary election when Condit lost his job. Dunne's attorneys retort that Condit's actions undermined his public standing. This dispute over who's responsible for a reputation illustrates important lessons in libel. It revisits legal territory previously inhabited by characters such as Elizabeth Taylor's former boyfriend and a dancer named Tiger Lil. Most immediately, the dispute over Condit's reputation could shape not just who prevails in this case, but how much money Dunne might owe if he loses. Consequently, Dunne's attorneys are vigorously tracking Condit's public standing in the wake of Chandra Levy's disappearance. "Now, prior to and during your (2002) campaign, did you conduct any polls?" Dunne attorney Paul LiCalsi asked Condit during a deposition last September. "No," Condit replied. "No?" LiCalsi persisted. "I don't do polls," Condit explained, according to a transcript of the deposition. LiCalsi pressed Condit about whether he consulted anyone else's polls. Condit said he hadn't. Condit said he recalled only doing one poll ever, probably in 1989. But in the fall of 2001, public records show, Condit's campaign did hire pollsters. Condit's campaign paid $13,500 on Oct. 19, 2001, for a "voter survey" conducted by a Portland, Ore. firm....

Condit erred big time in taking on Dominick Dunne.

A lot more than author Dominick Dunne (whoever he is) did in Condit (D-CA).

Condit's daughter was on Greta's show the other night, Geoffrey Fieger was making excellent points, but she would not shut up, said Gary was a good husband and father. Fieger said he will lose this suit.

Condit personifies what is wrong with the leaders in America- no honor. 40 years ago he would have done himself in after being caught.

Condit destroyed his own reputation with his actions and inactions after Chandra's disappearance.

What reputation?

Dittoes. Condit destroyed his own reputation with the whole Chandra Levy affair. That there is insufficient evidence to put him in prison where he belongs is a crime in and of itself.

.

CADEEE CONDIT has been lying for her father on National TV from the very start. She is a propagandist of the First Order, in the mold of HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON.

...In a new Time of War, in a new Century with an Enemy that's now just around the corner and up your street...

...isn't CLARITY in all matters precisely what we need on National TV instead of the very opposite?

...All of GRETTA's TV Legal Panelists nailed CADEE CONDIT with the reality of how a Jury is going to interpret her father's unwillingness to ever admitting to the D.C. Police, nor to anyone else, the extent of his SeXual relationship with CHANDRA LEVY. Something her parents have always been calling for him to do.

...American Media Publications is reporting that the CHANDRA LEVY Case is close to being solved this year, linking at the very least a man close to GARY CONDIT to the murder of CHANDRA.

Lot's a lot at stake here for EVERYONE.

Gary Condit, the luckiest SOB in the world.

Remember what was the hottest story on ALL the cable news stations on September 10, 2001?

Thanks to UBL and his merry men, Condit got a 6 month reprieve from the judgment of his constituents. He should accept it, shut up, and go away.

I saw that; she's completely out of touch with reality.

This was a HUGE mistake on Condit's part; he refused to answer the question about whether he was having an affair with Chandra; if he was't, why not say no.

Because a judge IS going to make him answer that question in court.

Everyone knows it's Butters.

If you haven't seen this South Park episode from the end of season 5, you should.

Condit did not have a very good reputation for years, even as an assemblyman in Sacramento jokes were made about his exploits.

I saw that. I wanted to slap that woman when she kept running her mouth, because Feiger WAS making some good points. She needs a dose of reality. I understand that Condit is her father, and she wants to defend him, but she need to realize that he did himself no favors by his behavior when Ms. Levy disappeared.

I saw her the other night but didn't stick around to listen. Where's Chad? Was she calling her dad "Gary"?
