Why Men Prefer Pretty Faces

So you think beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Think again. According to new research from the University of Exeter in Great Britain, the preference for pretty faces over ugly ones is embedded in our brains from the moment of birth and possibly prior to birth.

Newborn babies come fully equipped with built-in preferences, including a preference for an attractive face, that help them make sense of their new environment, report the BBC News Online and Newsweek magazine. The Exeter researchers showed more than 100 infants two images that were placed side by side. One was of an attractive face, while the other was a less attractive face. The babies, ranging in age from five hours old to two days old, spent about 80 percent of the time looking at the attractive face, while barely glancing at the unattractive face.

"You can show them pair after pair of faces that are matched for everything other than attractiveness. This leads to the conclusion that babies are born with a very detailed representation of the human face," Dr. Alan Slater, a psychologist at Exeter, explained to the BBC News. Why would infants have this capability? "It helps them to recognize familiar faces--particularly that of the mother--and it helps them in learning about the social world. Attractiveness is not simply in the eye of the beholder, it is in the brain of the newborn infant right from the moment of birth and possibly prior to birth," he added.
When those babies grow up, the preference for pretty faces doesn't change. And it crosses all cultures and geography as well. When an insular European is shown the faces of two Africans, the one he chooses as most attractive is also the same one an African chooses. And it works the other way around when an African is shown the faces of two Europeans.

"Although we think that standards of facial beauty vary over time and culture, they don't actually change that much," Slater explained to Newsweek. The evidence indicates that there is a biological and universal standard."

So don't blame a man when he can't help but look at a pretty face! He's biologically programmed that way.

I don't know about that, I hear a lot of women in general in todays world say " I don't like a fat man " " I like a man with perfect teeth " " I don't like a short man "
I have seen and know a few women who would tell me they don't like a certain man, because , i.e. " he is to fat, pot belly, to short, bad teeth, so on and so on.
I had a woman in church tell me, that before she meet her husband, she heard all the ( Gossip ) about him among the single women in church , and they were saying " He is Fat "
Yes, this women told me that, that in this church, that is what the single ladies were saying ( Gossiping ) about her husband , that he was fat.
I even had a ( a Christian ) woman blatantly say to me, that most women would not accept a man that has a physical handicap.
I heard other women blatantly say to me " Most women are looking for that PERFECT MAN either in LOOKS or in MONEY "
This is not my own opinion, but, this is what many women actually have said to me about the attitudes of women.
Women are just as concerned about " LOOKS " and " ATTRACTIVENESS " as men are, but, are not so " obvious " about it as man are.
I have seen it with my own eyes in churches how women would go after the most hunky guys, tall guys, educated guys , G.Q. guys.
I would sit back and watch do my own observation and observe women how they reject men who come up to them, and the man are i.e. Geeky, ugly, short, fat, not G.Q. material ( and the guys were nice guys, and had great personality's ) yes, I observed this with my own eyes.
I am sorry, but, I have to respectfully disagree with you on that. attractiveness

It seems like a simple tautology: "pretty" is by definition that which is preferred. To find that there are universals is not new. The same is true for the ratio of hips to waist in physical attraction, consistent across cultures.


It is useful however to remember that this is about tendency, not destiny.

You are a man I presume. I am a single woman, and not that very attractive so I know from whence I speak. You have to be a very different social setting as I've never seen that before. You've just dispelled my notion about some churches though *LOL*

Yeah no kidding. Some women just go to church to find a man though. I wonder how many women are really godly women interested in making a man happy.

Not only that, it's unhealthy, could be a tumor growing there, and she might not even know it.
I saw a woman on TV onetime, she was a normal average weight woman, but, she started to grow this HUGE tumor that was about the size of this woman's belly.
I think ( don't' quote me on this, but ) I think, the tumor was 85 pounds, and some of the tumor was already dead rotting flesh and was still connected to her body.
They showed it on TV, the doctors removing this huge tumor from this women, GROSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!! BARFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

"...really godly women" are hard to come by. They also demand certain behaviour from the men they desire. The men must be Godly and upright.

I was just making an observation, no particular point. Some women go to church to hunt for men, and so they may not be all that godly and wouldn't be demanding certain things from a man.
