Thanks.

Neal Broten . . . one of the long-time members of the Minnesota North Stars who would later play a key role in the Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup victory.

And soon after the Devils won that Cup, Broten was arrested on a DUI charge in his native Minnesota. LOL.

His brother Aaron Broten was one of the first really good players on the Devils back in the 1980s, too.

No..because the higher paid stars, for at least one more season, will stay out, thinking they can win, or go to Europe..Bettman is thinking 20 years out..a player today, who may have a 3-5 year career...is thinking about next season..

The league will declare an impass, announce its new terms, and open camp..They have to do it in order to have an draft..You'll have 2/3 of the players cross the line..and the NHLPA wil go the way of PATCO in another year..

Want a real long shot prediction..The next baseball commissioner..not Condi..but Bettman..

An excellent post.

I'm glad you cleared up the meaning of "Original Six". In fact, in the NHL's initial season (1917-1918), only 3 teams competed: Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Arenas (later the Maple Leafs). A fourth team, the Montreal Wanderers, withdrew after their arena burned down.

Didnt the NHL go out of business this year because of player greed?

Oh, Kevin Dineen, brings back great memories. I still shed a tear when I think of all the joy that team brought me when I was living in Connecticut and how I'll never get to enjoy another game at the mall for the rest of my life.

And league stupidity, too.

They tried to turn the NHL into the NBA, and it was a dismal failure.

No need to display images of the past.

Saw that while sitting in a room at the MIT Student Center with about 100 other Bruins fans! If Orr hadn't scored, the ref would have given him a penalty shot.

Do you think that the league should contract some teams? Which ones? I would say Carolina, Columbus, Phoenix, Ottawa and Nashville. Maybe a few others.

I haven't seen that pic in years..thanks for posting it..

Looking closely at the horizontal player, seriously, doesn't it resemble a former Dem presidential candidate who also played some hockey? Who knew?..Secret missions to Cambodia, AND the Stanley Cup..

Well you can go see the (AHL) Wolfpack, though I guess the mall part is being converted.

Dineen was my favorite Whaler--never backed down from anyone. I have his #11 hanging in my closet. *sniff*

There are two books I recommend to anyone who wants a historical perspective about how the NHL came to its current woes: Net Worth by David Cruise and Alison Griffiths and Game Misconduct by Russ Conway.

Net Worth is the most comprehensive economic history of the NHL up to the early 1990's, with special emphasis on the pre-NHLPA days, the Alan Eagleson era and the NHL pension scandal.

Game Misconduct is the book that really exposed the nature and extent of Alan Eagleson's frauds and conflicts of interest. The book will help you understand why Eagleson got away with it all for so long, and why it took the U.S. media to expose him.

The great Kevin Dineen.

I never really liked that Whalers logo, but then I realized how ingenious it is when their minor league team played in Binghamton one year -- and they simply rotated that logo 90 degrees to the left to make it a "B". LOL.

I can remember backwhen "fast" Eddie Giacomin would earn a $100 bonus for a shutout..it wasn't that long ago..

Contract Columbus, Ottawa, Florida, Atlanta, Washinton, and Nashville. Move Carolina and Phoenix back to Hartford and Winnepeg, respectively.
