Car boot woman may be brain damaged
February 18, 2005 - 8:09PM
The condition of Melbourne woman Maria Korp, found near death in the boot of a car, has improved but she remains on life support.
Doctors said Mrs Korp was now in a serious but stable condition five days after being found unconscious and in a critical condition.
The 50-year-old Mickleham mother of two was found in the car near Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance on Sunday, four days after she was reported missing.
A spokesman for The Alfred hospital said Mrs Korp had been taken off the critical list but she remained on life support in a medically-induced coma.
Doctors have said Mrs Korp is brain damaged and will not be able to give evidence against her attackers.
Mrs Korp's husband, Joseph Korp, 47, and his former mistress Tania Herman, 38, appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with her attempted murder.
They have also been charged with conspiracy to murder and intentionally causing serious injury.
Thankfully the police here suspected the husband (ex - supposedly reconciled) right away. They re-inforced a previous restraining order on him so that he couldn't even visit her in hospital. As it turns out they had great foresight and he and his mistress have now been detained on attempted murder charges. No doubt given the chance he would have turned off her life support.
In any murder case, the spouse or family member is usually the first one authorities deduce as the murderer.
How's your court system there? Any risk of a court ordered euthanasia? Depending on her level of brain damage, she might need extensive therapy, and still might never recover. Here in the States, there's a movement well under way to exterminate people with severe cognitive disabilities.
Congratulations on your tagline!
Thank ya. Hard to believe it's already been a month. Before I kicked the habit, I figured time would come to a crawl. LOL
At present the victim is in a medically induced coma and on life support. She was strangled with a belt and is rumoured to have brain damage. She has a 19 (from memory) year old daughter and 11 yr old son. Since the husband was under a restraining order he is not even allowed into the hospital. There has been nothing in the courts so far to indicate if she has any other next of kin. I would find it HIGHLY unlikely that the Australian courts would approve any form of euthanasia. It is still illegal, at least in this state.
It's illegal in Florida too, but have you heard what they're doing to Terri Schiavo?
Maybe another reason to go Down Under??
Maybe!!!!
The authorities have been very leary so far in disclosing the full extent of her condition. It is very possible that the family may decide to turn off her life support, however I don't think the courts here have any jurisdiction in that regard. I just pray that her two children are not forced to make that decision. Hopefully she has other living relatives, although there has been no mention of any :-(.
I do remember reading about Terri Schiavo some time ago but sadly I had lost touch with the case. To my knowledge the court system here has absolutely NO jurisdiction to authorise ANY form of euthanasia. And so say all of us!
There is really no possibility of euthanasia in the near future. One Australian territory did legalise euthanasia for a time, but the Federal Parliament intervened to make it illegal again.
I take it euthanasia has become acceptable there. That's a shame. I can't imagine killing someone just because they're disabled.
Ah, thanks for clearing that up. It's become fairly common here to remove life support from brain damaged patients. Quite often, those responsible claim the patient was brain dead, when they're not. Some in the media are still claiming Terri Schiavo is brain dead, even though there are videos of her interacting with people.
Here, if a person is being kept alive on life support and clinically 'brain dead', the family have the option of having the life support turned off. Of course this does not necessarily result in death, so euthansia is an incorrect term on my part. There is no way that the courts will iterfere in this case regardless of the circumstances surrounding the victim's condition.
Terri's estranged husband is planning to have her feeding tube removed as early as this Tuesday. The woman is aware, and she interacts with people.
That's incredibly sad. God bless her.
Terri's not on any life support. Her estranged husband is planning to have her feeding tube removed, resulting in her death by starvation and dehydration. The judge ordered that she's not allowed to have any food, even spoon feeding.
"I take it euthanasia has become acceptable there. That's a shame. I can't imagine killing someone just because they're disabled."
Not at all...euthanasia is still illegal here. However turning off life support does not necessarily result in death. Therein lies a whole other topic....
