Georgia federal judge: Textbook stickers stating evolution is a theory not fact is unconstitutional.
Center For Reclaiming America ^

Posted on 02/17/2005 5:30:03 PM PST by Happy2BMe

News Alert:
On January 13, a federal judge in Georgia ruled that stickers placed in textbooks of an Atlanta area school district saying “Evolution is a theory, not a fact” are unconstitutional! ( View sticker.) According to this judge, such criticisms of evolution are an endorsement of religion. The judge’s action is the latest example of the nationwide effort to ban any critical analysis of the theory of evolution and insist that evolution be taught as the only option!

The Action:
The Center for Reclaiming America has launched a national petition to rally 100,000 citizens immediately to oppose this federal court edict and insist that evolution be taught as a theory, not fact, in our schools. The “Our Kids Deserve The Truth” petition has three goals:

  1. INSIST that evolution be taught as a theory, not a fact.
  2. DEFEND school administrators, teachers, parents and students that stand up for truthful teaching about evolution.
  3. SUPPORT legislative and school board efforts to ensure that our kids are taught the truth about evolution and promote

    Objective Origins in school curriculum.

We are also launching a national awareness campaign targeting millions with the “Our Kids Deserve the Truth” message. Also, through this grassroots effort, we want to empower citizens with the resources they need to effectively challenge school boards—leading them to adopt the Objective Origins curriculum.

I saw this disgusting documentary between jobs this afternoon. Liberals losing their mind over the Patriot Act and shaking boogie bears in all directions.

Where was their documentary when Janet Reno was running amok in Waco and having assault rifles four inches from the nose of six year old Elian Gonzales? They looked so phony with their vapid concern over the powers of the Patriot Act while not mentioning their own dirty deeds that opened to door to all kinds of abuse.

They ranted and wept and wiped their eyes with the Constitution over military being used against citizens in Quan Tanamo and ignore Waco and Ruby Ridge. I wipe my feet on them. Their mask is off and they look ridiculous.

I am trying to stay on topic, but you fought back fond memories of long long ago college days.

What cart wheels did he go to to reach that decision. It's time for the congress to begin yanking these fools off the bench.

I read recently that 40% or so of Americans believe that a bullet leaving a curved barrel will continue to move in an arc.

Where did you hear this and how exactly was the question worded?

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it." - Albert Einstein in Albert Einstein: The Human Side, edited by Helen Dukas (Einstein's secretary) and Banesh Hoffman, and published by Princeton University Press.

That is HOW it works. You are asking WHY it works that way. We don't have a law for that, just a theory. The theory is mostly checking out, but it has not been confirmed enough. The General Theory of Evolution (recall Darwin posited both a Special and a General Theory) is a theory that has less evidence, and is less universally accepted, than General Theory of Relativity.

thanks, that fits with the quote, and as you say does not mean AE was what we would call a "believer"

Huh?

I do _not_ in any manner, way or form support such a sticker.

If you are referring to my post 113, I was saying that if there is going to be such a sticker, let the ignorance remain.

Makes it easier to deal with in the classroom.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you did (I'd suspected that you didn't, and then confirmed it by checking your previous posts here). I was just tossing it out there as an evolution-related question.

It would be nice to know exactly what ID entailed wouldn't it?

I don't think you will get anything coherent. It is doubtful that two creationists will agree on the content of ID, but they will both erroneously call it a "theory".

Remember, if you start getting confused by ID it will all become clear if you purchase on of shubi industries aluminum hats.

Getting back to evolution, it is pretty clear that something is going on, denying that is just plain foolish. But since the mechanism is as yet unknown then evolution as I understand it, is little more then conjecture.

I apologize for not being clear enough.

We don't have a law for that, just a theory.

Of course we don't have a law. Laws don't explain why things in the universe happen as they do; that's the purpose of theories. Theories explain why things happen, laws explain what happens.

The theory is mostly checking out, but it has not been confirmed enough.

What would "confirm" it "enough"? What would happen once that "confirmation" is found?

The General Theory of Evolution (recall Darwin posited both a Special and a General Theory) is a theory that has less evidence, and is less universally accepted, than General Theory of Relativity.

Less evidence only to those who dismiss what they don't like because they fear the implications, and it's only less accepted because many of those who accept relativity don't actually understand it (just like they don't understand evolution), but they don't think that it contradicts their religious beliefs, so they don't dismiss it out of hand without even the slightest examination.

Scientists are very sticky about the terms fact, law and hypothesis. Don't quote me but I see a scientific fact as an observable natural occurrence; a scientific theory as an attempt to explain how this natural occurrence works; and, a scientific law is a mathematical description of this natural occurrence. Mostly it keeps me out of trouble.:-}

I have seen on discovery and similar type channels some pretty good arguments against evolution as it is understood today. Survival of the fitest, random mutations, etc.

Evolution happens. I'm a Catholic and I have no problem saying that. Abiogenesis could happen tomorrow and it wouldn't affect my faith. Now if you create a universe ex nihlo in your garage complete with the laws of physics and all the requisite matter, I might have to rethink my philosophy. :-}
